It is another separate mod, switching the game to ancient era modiefied AoE2 tech tree, something like alternative AoE2,
For me, it is best DLC / Expansion for AoE2,
The best DLC after DotD hands down.
For a SP player is a must.
The campaign is amazingly made. What's more, they've somehow managed to figure out how to do persistent choices. So if you select a bodyguard corps in Scenario #1, you'll have the same corps as your bodyguards in Scenario #2. This is a simple example, but there are even more complicated examples

Does it have multiplayer? I want to play with my brother and want to get 2 copies. If it doesn't have multiplayer than that is a problem.
You can play the civs in custom games. Not in quick match or ranked though. You don't even need to go into the Chronicles section. You can do it through regular lobbies. You just enable All in the Civilisation Set on the right hand panel third down. EDIT: (or just play with only the 3 civs from Chronicles). Up to you.
Then the answer should be a clear: no.
All praise ever has been on the single player campaign.
Normal AoE 2 DE has 45 civs in multiplayer, you really don't need 5 weird greek ones; especially not if both of you don't play 5,000 hours.
Instead, AoE 2 DE has several coop campaigns with some 60 missions. That I would look into, first. [Disclaimer: I hate separate game modes and am no campaign player, so Chronicles forever will be a pass for me, same as RoR]
Maybe you should give campaigns a go, hmm? Also Chronicles is not quite as separate as RoR. You can play the 3 Chronicles civs with the other 45 in lobby/custom games, you could even make your own.
It does not have co-op campaigns if that's what the OP was asking. You're right there.
I do not really care about the multiplayer part of Chronicles, but Quintem made some good points across and for anyone who enjoys playing unranked multiplayer the Chronicles civs are included. They are however supposed to get balance changes from upcoming update to make them less op especially with Athenian navy. I do not know about unranked multiplayer, but the Athenian navy is definitely op on the campaign. Compared to normal civs the Chronicles civs seem to be on crack which would help explain why they are not available for ranked multiplayer.
If they are just going to abandon that concept just like they abandoned the 2 previous attempts to bring AOE1 up to date I'm not going to bother.
The campaign is quite nice (espeically for the cutscenes), albeit with some "filler scenarios" and a penchant for micromanaging units.
The three civs are overall quite bland, also because units are balanced as in age of kings (e.g. no academy and uber-heavy infantry but jhoplites are just a slightly glorified milita from barracks); in my opinion it would not have hurted to get also two eastern civs as well (e.g. phoenicians).
A most ridiculous feature is that for unknown reasons made the priests into priestesses but gave them the male voicing from age1 when converting or healing....
Even if they never release another Chronicles, the Battle for Greece entry is quite self contained. If you're looking to play some sort of dedicated casual multiplayer with them, you're looking for the wrong thing. The ability to use the Chronicles civ in casual matches is a bonus feature, not the selling point
Even if they add new Chronicles civs, there's no guarantee they'll follow the blueprint of the Battle for Greece civs. The beauty of these civs is that they only have to be balanced for the campaigns, and against each other. That said, the next teased entry is Alexander. So they'll probably stick to the Greece formula for now
