As others have pointed out, AoE2 Definitive Edition is actually an entirely different game.
Some games indeed do offer redeeming their old keys on Steam or similar. I e.g. redeemed my key for Stalker: Shadow on Chernobyl on GOG and got the game there for free. Same with LA Noire and GTA IV on the Rockstar Launcher.
However, AoE 2 is not one of those games. DE is drastically different to the old version.
