What is the Konnik based on?
I'm interested in the history of it and I want to know what caused its current design. Where did the name Konnik come from? Why does it have a flail?

Google has been unhelpful so if anyone has, like, an interview with the designer of the Bulgarians or something I'll be grateful.

Konnik. The name is certainly of Slavic origin. It is a cavalryman (perhaps a military cavalryman) in Bulgarian. A similar name can be found in Russian, derivative names in Slovenian, Serbian, Croatian, Polish, even Czech. Although these languages, like Russian, usually use other names for the classical name - horseman/rider - the above mentioned is more of a variant. In Czech, for example, the name koník has the meaning not of rider, but of little horse. Although there is also the word koňák, which is a non-literal term for someone who is around horses (takes care of them, trains them, rides them).

In the Bulgarian version of Wikipedia, the name konnik is listed as follows: Конник (Древен Рим), Конникът (на латински: Eques) е представител на социална прослойка в Древен Рим, наречена Конническо съсловие. Horseman (Ancient Rome), A horseman (Latin: Eques) was a member of a social class in ancient Rome called the Equestrian gentry.
