Spartans
I like the idea of testing out new ideas with different campaign specific civs but bro.. I love Spartans why can't we play in ranked or multiplayer :(
Would it be terrible to make a playable version of them in ranked? I've always loved the stories of greece/spartans and would probably solely play them even if they're terrible.

Things are... Chronicles civs are busted. They will ruin ranked games because of their too unique gimmicks.

The best thing could happen to them is a separate rank system for Chronicles exclusively.

I think the only fundamentally unbalanced thing about them would be the two Docks. Mind you, unless you're Gurjaras, you cannot garrison Fishing Ships in Docks. These three will dominate everyone else by Lembos raids in Dark Age

By isolating them from the ranked multiplayer, they can be balanced better for the campaign itself. They only have to be 'balanced' against each other. As an example, take the Spartan tech which allows Hoplites to reduce incoming bonus damage by 33%. Normally, this would be a marginal tech as anti-infantry bonus damage isn't as prominent in the main game. However the Achaemenids & Athenians both have their own anti-infantry units in the War Chariot & Gastrapheteros (reskinned Hand Cannoneer) respectively, so the tech is always relevant

Play Goths ranked and imagine them Spartans.
Or Romans with double infantry armor. Adarma!

It goes a bit further. Like, Persian and Athenian TC upgrades/policies give stronger Vill buffs than the Roman Vill work rate bonus, which is already something people complained about. That alone is quite busted, making them superior to almost all other eco bonuses.

The Spartan food drop off bonus is also dubious. The Malian one was utterly busted when introduced, and the Spartan one affects the most fundamental resource in the game, in all of its forms. Mind, "drop off increase" = faster work rate + higher carry capacitiy + longer lasting resources. And the Spartans get that on ALL food sources.

Except all that isn't fundamentally busted, only numerically. You could easily shave those numbers down in two patches and make them multiplayer ready if you wanted to

The second point I was making is that maybe this shouldn't be done, even if it can be done, it shouldn't be
