Austrians are included from some of the missions as well from edited comment, but they are usually not playable besides getting control over them from one of the Bohemian missions. While Austrians are recognized and do exist from some missions the problem is that they never had an empire and never were independent during this time period.
So forget about Austria, dude :(
My main concern is that if it at any point Forgotten Empires stops making new civs entirely then AoE II: DE is going to be abandoned at some point and probably not getting another remake either besides AoE IV which does not seem to be as good overall in comparison to AoE II: DE. Its custom scenarios for example are apparently still in "beta" and possibly might stay that way for at least a few more years or longer, has some issues with multiplayer similar to previous games of this series, and I have various other issues with AoE IV as well including these civs being harder to play as overall in comparison to AoE II: DE civs among other things.
It's kinda sad that Austrians are not in AoE:III regarding the fact that the 4 absolutely most important powers of the 16th and 17th centuries were the Austrians, Ottomans, Spanish and the French. The Habsburg-Ottoman wars were one of if not the biggest conflict of the early modern age.
It is a stupid excuse actually. Not only could the Austrians have been included for AoE III: DE or earlier with the original or from an expansion pack with original, but they possibly could have had a campaign as well for AoE III: DE or original in addition to Prussians (although contrary to the rest on this list it would be only 10 missions total and only five missions for each campaign), the Americas (basegame plus War Chiefs expansion), China, Japan, and India. I get that AoE III: DE has a bigger and more complex tech tree for each civ than AoE II: DE, but if Ensemble Studios/Forgotten Empires had known how successful Age of Empires III and Age of Empires III: DE were going to be in the first place maybe they might have reconsidered adding Austrians/Prussians to AoE III or AoE III: DE as well.
I think the only reason why Austrians and Prussians are not included in this game is because of the tech tree and Germans and nothing else. Also, most of AoE III: DE is not based on the 16th century. It is mostly based on 17th century until 19th century besides a few historical battles and Morgan Black.
