AoE II: DE probably works better overall on single player than multiplayer besides maybe 1v1. Bigger than 1v1 on multiplayer is probably more likely to experience freezing/crashes especially with 4v4 team games.
Your comments are confusing. First you only mentioned HD, but now you are mentioning both HD and DE? Bottom line is that I do not think that AoE II: DE is ruined; although, people seem to overall have more issues with multiplayer than single player when it comes to the game freezing/crashing. The best way to resolve issues with freezing/crashing on single player are obvious such frequently saving the game if you need to; although, autosaves do reduce the likelihood of needing to do this as well.
Why repeat the same comment over again on the same thread? It should be obvious as to why some people consider HD as ruined, because Forgotten Empires abandoned it and has less from basegame than DE as well besides Age of Kings and Age of Conquerors. The Last Kahns was originally supposed to be on HD as well, but is only on DE.
