Multiplayer in offline mode

Hello fair people of the mighty internet,
my friend and I are on a remote cottage with very close to no internet. We each have our own AoE 2 DE copy on steam. I can run a wifi hotspot with static IP adresses so "LAN" should work. However, if I open the game with no internet connection, I have no option to play multiplayer. Is there any way to play together without internet?

Huh. How about that. There is indeed a "LAN" server option when browsing lobbies or creating a lobby, but the game won't allow you to get that far if it can't connect to its multiplayer services.

We've come a long way since 2001, but I feel like DirectPlay should still be an option with this game. It would make sense in a situation like yours where there's no internet connectivity but there's still a local network available. Plus, what if I'm banned from multiplayer for one reason or another and still have friends who want to host me directly in a game outside of the official servers? Microsoft seems to have really locked down Definitive Edition.

The original (2013/HD) version might have some hope of still having this feature, but I wouldn't bet $19.99 on it.

Even in HD Edition, Multiplayer (both LAN and Online) is sadly unavailable when you're in offline mode. The sole version that offers Offline LAN is the CD Version.
