Should I play the AOE 1 first?
Hey guys,

Quick question: Should I play the first Age of Empires in order to enjoy this? I don't know if it's better to buy both remastered games or just this one.

AOE 1: DE is a great game too. You would not want to miss the Clubmen, the Roman Empire and ancient Egypt.

no one should buy aoe 1, de or not, this game is a mess, the remaster is bad (like, i think they didnt know what pathfinding was)
go aoe2 directly

Aoe1 DE is unplayable and only good for nostalgia; Aoe2 DE is a great game

No. You shouldn't have to buy the first Aoe. This one far better in terms of gameplay

AOE1 is based around the stone/bronze age whereas 2 is based in the Dark/Middle age. They're basically the same game in different time periods so it depends on what you prefer.

As to which is objectively better, 2 is a better game than 1 and DE is a much better re-release (1 still has a lot of the original's dated jank). There's also so much content in all of the games it's unlikely you'll ever actually "complete" them. 2 DE is definitely the most active in terms of multiplayer.

Aoe 1 de is perfectly playable. AI and pathfinding have been greatly improved since the game was released. However, it is true that in 2 there are many more things (civilizations, successes, technologies, etc.).

Something weird I notice about aoe1de is that in so many ways it feels like aoe2...

A few things I notice about the AoE1DE...

- You can queue up stuff like aoe2... which was not possible in the original release of the game, changing the meta so dramatically..

- You can walk over farms... So no more farm block or other shenanigans like that.

- Rally points, another aoe2 feature who made it into the aoe1de...

I bet the list keeps going on and on but those are like the most obvious ones. Anyway, if anyone wanna play aoe2de, send me a steam friend request... I need more aoe2de peeps on my list for the sake of the lulz and a better aoe2 feed on steam.
