It depends on what type of RTS do you like to play.
AoE2 is more macro first and micro second. Most of your units don't have abilities and the difference between civs comes down to differences in the mostly same tech tree and civilisation bonuses, 1-2 unique units and 2 unique techs.

AoE4 is more micro heavy with most of the units having abilities and widely differing tech trees. It is more like starcraft than anything else in the AoE franchise.

AoE2 has a lot more singleplayer content though and the multiplayer base is larger than AoE4 as well.

Hope this helps you out.

Never played 4. I’ve had it on the wishlist for a while, it’s been on sale a few times, I’ve just never had the need, or desire, to pull the trigger on it.

AoE2 is nostalgic for a lot of us. The campaigns offer small snippets of history, the multiplayer is alive and well, and the professional scene is amazing. It might be one of those games that’s more fun to watch then play, at least for me.

What continues to amaze me is how much I still have left to learn and master. I’ll never be the best, but one of the most positive takeaways from playing this game is it inspires you to keep trying.

yeah AoE 2 DE is nostalgic and with the DE version a lot of QoL features and good MP abilities :)

Both are good in their own right but personally, I have much more fun with AoE 2 as I love stuff such as friendly fire on siege weapons or being able to cut down trees with onagers to take my opponent the oppurtunity to camp.

Playernumber-wise AoE 2 is still ahead. In ranked MP, both pull off similar numbers, however, AoE 4 works in seasons so it never removes inactive players like AoE 2 does, so figures there are inflated.

AoE4 has a fraction of the playerbase of AoE2, so if you want to play online, AoE4 is a dead fish. Regardless of numbers, AoE4's online state is atrocious and you'll be hit with way less games per period of time.

If you an afford it, both games. support RTS and AoE. AoE2 is better but 4 is solid game, but I think it was rushed out a bit and the graphics are artistically decent (like it enough) but graphically it's a bit dated. Not expecting ray traced RTS but it looks like it came out 5+ years ago, no like 2.

It's about half the player base I'd not say that's too bad.

Definitely AoE2 for me, I've been coming back to it for years ever since I stumbled across it in a Best Buy. Never thought it would get a nice HD re-release or a DE release and come surging back.
Also runs far better for than AoE4. I don't like the overall style of 4 with its cold menu UI and lack of single player content.

I would say AOE4 is better. Factions feels unique, gameplay is fun, visuals are better etc. But I agree they have to keep working on that game, it still needs more content.

It is pretty bad comparing a 2 year old game versus a 24 year old game.

Depend on which kind of content.

AOE2 has the most players in the series. Learning curve is pretty ez since most units share their visuals across many civs.

AOE4 although not as huge as AOE2, but they are halve of it, still a good strong number of players. Learning curve in AOE4 can really depend on civ picked, and units visual although consistent, they have their unique looks for each civ.

Otherwise, AOE2 still has some constraints that AOE4 picks it up like units on walls, etc... At this point they are already differentiate themselves enough. Cannot compare 2 and 4 for which is better beside real data, but rather whatever type of play you want to play. I see both personally got their niche market, and it's enough for a genre that barely receive attentions from other genres.
