2) It has been invented in Age of Kings, several years before devs added siege towers.
6 soldiers, however, is the capacity of the siege ram. The battering ram (Castle Age) only carries 4 men.
They recently changed it to 6 from 4. (Movement speed was also increased from .5 to .6)

Even if the speed and attack boost not present, having some units inside who can deny enemy attacks on ram (villagers have good dmg output against it) is really viable in some situations.
