So it's a linguistic choice more than historical?
I know konnik is just Bulgarian for horseman.
And according to the AoE wiki the Savar is indeed based on the sasanian Aswaran.

Yup, this immediately came to my mind. You also see it spelt as Asavaran. It's one of those words you get used to everyone coming up with their own spelling. Just buy a bunch of Sassanian (Which also gets different spellings) military history books to see.
That would be my guess. I didn't know about konnik, but that would also confirm how they came up with the name.
