Romans have no place in AOE2
Romans officially confirmed now :winter2019sadyul:

I must say I've not always been the biggest fan of their recent civ additions to the main AOE2 roster but this one easily takes the first place. The game is literally set after the Fall of Rome. Why the hell would you add Romans?

I mean they could add a group like the Inuit for example (they would be a replacement for the "Skræling" that already exist in game), but they don't fit the style of AOE 2's gameplay. I mean the Inuit wouldn't even be able to have farms in their case, much less castles or towers!

You outright sack Rome as the Goths, so why not give such an important faction its own civ instead of using a placeholder? They are a dying empire that doesn't make it to the end of AOE 2's timeline, but the same could be said for some others.
Zapotecs?
Tarascans?

Both were empires in teh Middle Ages, both even more or less predate the Aztecs, which were honestly quite late to the party, and both even actually fought the Aztecs, while the Mayans mostly did not.

Mayans were added in over those, because of pop culture.

I like the Mayans, but neither their inclusion or design (Archers were considered the lowest order of soldiery in Mayan warfare, their favoured weapons were massive jade throwing spears) are very true to their historical importance.

The Romans in AOE2 will be representing the late Christian Western Roman Empire which tends to be overlooked in popular culture because its not Rome at the height of its power but a titan who has lost half its strength is still incredibly powerful.

If AOE2 was a story the Romans would be a character like Ned Stark, Dong Zhou or Leto Atreides. They die early in the story but they have a huge role in setting events in motion and even after their death their influence on the living characters is strong.

The Romans were definitely Europe's, North Africa's and the Middle East's Leto Atreides figure.

So many people wanted to be Paul Atreides, just to claim that prestigious legacy!

In our language (I assume you also use Steam on Portuguese Jon), it doesn't have that written down. It is written:

MORE 1 new civilization long requested by fans for use in the standard Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition:
- Romans. Ascend to the throne of an empire that dominates the Mediterranean Sea and defend its borders against countless barbarian invasions. The unique Roman units are the Legionary, a robust infantry unit, and the Centurion, a heavy cavalry unit that increases the power of nearby militia line units.

Skirmish sure is guaranteed, firstly because it doesn't make sense not to have, secondly because the Steam release news cites Romans vs Aztecs.

It doesn't make sense not to have ranked MP as well. And if it doesn't, it will soon be reverted by insistent community requests and Unranked numbers. It would be a matter of time.
I use Steam in English, but I just clicked on teh Store page again, and it had not yet updated, I guess.
I swear it said they would be "available in all stardard game modes".
It does say that the Romans are ready to fight in the *new age*. I don't think there's another way to interpret that as they're just like any other AoE2 civ.

If you scroll down, right now it says they will only be available in singleplayer and unranked.

I love the "this isnt true to life" crowd when people talk about video games where villagers work 24/7 for hundreds of years, and where skirmishers can destroy a castle with enough javelins.

If you don't buy the DLC, they're not in.

First time I hear this comparison. Loved it.
And I agree 110%.

Another idea of mine for an AOE2 Rome campaign: it would feature the Kingdom of Soissons and/or other imperial remnants fighting for a place in the "world after Rome". The first half of the campaign would be a flashback of the events of the Fall, and the second half they would estabilish a kingdom only to be doomed at the narration after the final mission (as we know that these remnants only thrived for a few years).

Since we had Huns and Goths all these years, with the late Romans in the game we can finally make a good recreation of the Fall of Rome.
The event that started the whole AOE2 timeline should get at least an historical battle, if a campaign is not possible. (This also applies to the Fall of Constantinople)

Oh wow... they edited it. That really sucks, hopefully they reconsider that. I can't see why they would specifically withhold it from ranked. If it was just temporary for balance testing, they would definitely say.

They're going to mess up my singleplayer skirmishes if I should be willing enough to throw away money for them.

I'd rather have them for Ranked MP only LOL. Would make you Romaboos happy.

And there I thought Im looking at the wrong game and this was actually a banner for AoE 1 Definitive...

So awesome, Roman legionaries against british longbomans or turkish for example janissary :D :D, thats nothing, we´re just speaking about 500-1000 years of development...

AoE 1 = ancient times, AoE 2 = medieval...
