It was like this back in C&C and Warcraft 1-2, aswell. Artillery had a lot of attack, but constantly punished teh player with friendly fire, unless properly used.
This should definitely be an improvement added to Return of Rome
if i want to be specific i keep their stance off and let my forces act as defenders so the siege units can do their job on specific buildings.
doesn't matter. mangonels and onagers can easily cause a friendly fire incident and i've seen the ai cause friendly fire incidents as well, although they were helped by a horse unit running through their forces and causing the destruction.
if you want use their potential - you should improve your skills in control or micro
Especially in Castle Age - Onagers are the most powerful Units
1. You can take out Castles with Onagers while micro around the fire with a Knight.
2. You can Attack Ground and micro forward to win Ground against floods of Enemies.
3. You can combine Onagers with Archers and also micro with Knights.
1. assuming no ballistics or murder holes and also assuming no pikemen about. you'd also need a lot of mangonels/onagers to make enough of a dent. three battering rams/capped rams can do the job alot more quickly at a fraction of the cost and they are a lot more resistant to arrow fire, especially without a lot of upgrades.
2. you'd need a fair few to make it a carpet bombing and eliminate the enemy force. two or three is not gonna be enough if the enemy forces split to come after your mangonel/stone thrower or better
3. until the enemy starts kiting with one unit, your archers are on attack or defence stance, then a bunch of units pile in from a side and your archers and their forces are creamed by your siege weapons. you can only predict so much in a battle. if you want to make absolutely certain make sure those archers have defenders and know where they are coming from and block off access while your combined force attacks elsewhere. But short of no ballistics and lacking upgrades, i doubt the mangonels can zero in on a shot correctly while the archers are missing the target near the edge of their range and the ai is predicting quite well, more so if all the mangonels are firing at the same time at the same area.
You'd have to keep a keen eye on everything you are doing moment to moment, assuming you weren't attacked elsewhere at the same time.
and you can micro around ballistics
2. Exactly - if you are not good in control and micro - you never get the point
