Buying DE was cheaper for me than buying the DLCs in HD. Coupled with the graphics overhaul, it was like a steal for me.
With everything, it's a matter of preference. If you play just for the nostalgia then maybe HD is enough for you, but if you want to experience the evolution of this game, as the developers add more to it, then this is the place to be. They also really captured the "feel" of the original game in this one. Honestly, I think it's one of the best re-makes ever made.
Most of things you will expect in DE compare to HD:
1. Balance (definitely)
2. Some HD campaigns reworked
3. DLCs which adds new civs and campaigns
4. Definitely hit or miss. Optional cosmetics for your troops and building.
5. Modding. People also remake/create maps as mods.
Game run pretty smooth for a low end spec PC which I'm using (4gb ram). I recommend waiting for them to sale the game like 30 to 50 percent if you want to save wallet. They even sales the DLCs to 50%, except recent one.
Some downsides perhaps would be bugs encountered from new content introducing and new patches. Hopefully in the future there would be less. Thank that in Game bugs and Technical problems of Steam discussion, devs are mostly active (Your response is going to be 1 days most time, 1 weeks at worst[my estimate])
My conclusion, I can't get back to HD after DE, despite many times people said it's going to be rough, I feel like this one would stay for a long while as long as devs are still openly support this game. Good enjoyment from it.
Game doesn't have Steam workshop, but have ingame mod manager.
You can click on the gears next to your portrait to access it. Click on portrait to check event portrait and cosmetics. You can find past events' cosmetics through mod editor, Zetnus mostly ported them after events are over.
Definitely. DE has all DLCs from HD Edition in its base game (Indians have been reworked into Hindustanis + there are now three additional Indian civs), campaigns have been reworked (especially the Forgotten ones), the game comes with new QOL features such as command queue (= ordering your villager to build two houses and then go to wood by just shift + right clicking on the appropriate areas on the map) or global queue (= a bar on top that shows what you're currently researching and training)
The most obvious change is probably visuals. Every building now has a destruction animation instead of exploding to crumble and each building now also has a unique construction site which helps you identifying whatever building your opponent wants to build without clicking on it.
