So I´m (PC) thinking about getting this version, so i can play with my friend who is on XBOX.

What are actually the modes you can play together pvp pve or what?

Yes, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition has crossplay. According to the Xbox store, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition has crossplay capabilities, giving players a chance to battle in real-time with players on other platforms.

You will have an advantage however on the PC.

coming back to the topic. somehow I cannot add my friend in Steam account (I have it linked with the Xbox account etc). I tried all troubleshooting suggestions all over internet, and I couldn't find the button for crossplay. what am I missing?

Dunno about the problems people are having, all I know is I've played against ppl with the xbox icon next to their name in ranked.
