You either have to rebind or use the mouse to scroll and move quickly (e.g. by clicking on the mini map).
Afair Mac users were the first to see arrows and WASD options. That was back around 1986. AoE came along less than 5 years after that.
imho the main influence was the increased popularity of the laptop PC. Smaller keyboards meant the 'Arrow' keys were often dropped and players had to start using WASD instead.
I remember my first encounter with a laptop being used to sell a game. That was Command & Conquer back in 1995. Most PC laptops were, by then, copying the Apple design and incorporated a TrackPad. The 5 minutes I took standing playing C&C in that shop convinced me two things...
1] Track pads are awesome and I wanted one.
2] C&C was awesome and I bought it
It took me a few years to actually buy my first 'modern' laptop as back then you could buy a house and a car for less than the cheapest laptops.
Top down or isometric games like AoE and C&C used the arrows to move the map. C&C was I think the first game to accept the mouse moving the displayed screen
Oops I'd better stop ;D
I wanna go back to the days where houses are cars were cheaper than laptops
so i'm stuck rebinding everything.... :/
does aoe4 or aoe3 have wasd as default layouts?
None of the Age games have wasd as their default layout.
The real estate around wasd are used for building/production/order hotkeys by almost everyone in aoe games and most rts games I play for that matter. Honestly I'd probably be at least twice as slow if it weren't for those hotkeys. If you care about playing competitively it's probably going to be the best layout for you.
Sadly it's mainly a matter of perspective. Back then laptops were costing maybe a years salary for the average person. As the population exploded so did our need for housing. Then to compound that particular need many Councils in the UK ramped up their building production. All part of the urban renewal after WW2. So, away with all those damaged slums and in with many new houses and infrastructure. The main bad side effect was rampant inflation.
I will happily sell a couple of my old laptops at say... 10% of their original costs ;P Just so you know that would mean you'd be buying an old 486 for around the price you can buy a decent modern office laptop ..... interested in the spec? well 486 with a 1024 x 768 14 inch screen. 20Gig HDD and 8Gig ram. Your choice of OS would be XP; Vista; W7 if you're lucky.
You might have to buy a new battery for them ;)
Some games use different controls than others and it can be a hassle to switch your brain between one and the other, but even though I tend to have pretty hardcore habits I've realised over time that those differences are usually for a good reason and it makes more sense to get used to it.
