[FIXED] Game is Lagging Even with a Powerful GPU
EDIT2: Finally fixed by disabling MPO in Windows 10! Here's how: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/yvyqc7/disabling_multiplane_overlay_mpo_fixed_all/

Original post: I've been having stuttering and lagging end-game with AMD RX 6800 XT. I've heard downgrading to patch "20 October 2020" would fix it.
Why isn't this fixed yet??????? How long do we have to wait to get the product we bought fixed? Is this issue even recognized by the developers?

EDIT: I figured out the problem: The GPU usage is below 10% ALL THE TIME!! The only time it starts working at 80%+ is when I'm at the "SELECT CIVILIZATION" menu when I press the civilization bar beside my username in the Multiplayer ranked lobby. As soon as I close the civ menu, GPU usage falls down to ~10% just like in-game low usage.

Before you get mad, think about that the game was first released some 23 years ago and adjust your expectations.

This video might explain why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzbv6w4zgUQ

Sometimes lag is also due to oponents hardware, not yours. Or the software cannot feed everything fast enough to your PC no matter how fast your hardware.

Can you give the exact specifics of the game you were playing? Lagging would indicate a problem with your internet, not your GPU. If you notice framerate drops, then yea its the GPU.

The developers are much more likely to help players that help themselves. Instead of the whole "wait to get the product we bought fixed?", it usually helps to go through the extensive troubleshooting tips given on ageofempires.com. Do those before complaining on the forums because then you'll have helpful information to help diagnose what's going on.

Hi B-Ram I'm sorry you are having these issues.

Can you try to verify your files in the Steam Library? Age of Empires II -> Right button -> Properties -> Local files
Can you upgrade your graphic drivers and check Windows update?
Can you try to add the whole game folder to your antivirus' exception list? C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\AoE2DE is the default, AoE2DE_s.exe is there.

Thanks!

I'm playing single-player...
Check this out: https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/si9big/amd_and_age_of_empires_2_definitive_we_found_why/

According to OP, this issue came back later after patch 20 October 2020.

Thanks for the reply. None of these worked. I figured out the problem: The GPU usage is below 10% ALL THE TIME!! Who can fix this? Who is responsible, you or AMD? Who should I inform? I see many people having this problem even the Nvidia folks.

Best regards.

I had a a lot of lag too start to happen. And i never had problems running this program. The game would lag so bad i would have to restart the pc. I found a soultion take off the graphics dlc and it will not lag anymore. Maybe its a glitch in the new patch because i never had this problem with this game.

I have the ultra graphics DLC off. Too bad it didn't work for me.

B-Ram can you tell me if disabling AMD SmartAccessMemory in AMD's Adrenaline Software helps?

I've been testing for a few days with SAM turned off. Unfortunately, no difference at all.

Hello. I've finally fixed the problem by disabling MPO on Windows 10, which is enabled by default. The feature only affected AoE II DE for me. Apparently, it's a widespread issue with both AMD cards and Nvidia's RTX 3000 Series. The link to the Reddit post is in my original post.

I hope this helps you guys when you receive support tickets from people with stutters/flickering issues.

Best regards.
