game lagging

I'm a long time returning player. Please explain to me why this game is soooo laggy online. I don't understand how a 20year cold game can still be soo laggy with a 2000$ pc. It was more playable on a 56k modem on msn gaming zone in 2001... Please tell me if theres a fix. Thank you

its not laggy unless there is someone in the game that has a terrible connection. if you press alt S in the game you can see a symbol beside the name of the person who is lagging. if its you thats lagging everyone else's symbol will appear to be lagging.

Nope, I have the same problem, with a perfect ping(20ms) and a highspeed fibre optic Internetconnection. My girlfriend is in the same network and we both got the extreme lags...
But only after the earlygame phase. Could it depense on the populationlimit?

This badly need to be fixed, at the moment AOE isnt playable!

if youre playing with higher than standard pop it can cause lag if your machine cant handle it. maybe even if it can. ive never played with higher than standard pop so idk if thats the problem for you. higher than standard pop + mods would be likely to cause more lag if anything did. the game is completely playable. i have no lag unless there is someone else in the game who is lagging. if youre playing on trash components or using a trash connection and or if you have extra programs running on your pc while playing then dont blame the game for your lag. the fact that it works perfectly for me on an average gaming pc just shows that the game is likely not the problem.

Dude, sorry, i should post my specs... so here are my trashy components:

-Asus Hero Crosshair VII x570 chip
-Ryzen 5800x
-Radeon 6900xt (Gigabyte Reference)
- 32 Gb DDR4 Ram GSkill trident Z 4000hz (running only at 3800hz )
- win 10 64bit

So I know, the CPU could be better, but it was the best i´ve got in these hard times...

My Firestrike Score is round about 40 000

I think that should be enough for AOE 2...

Its the same thing like Imaorolfcopter said, I never had this problem, and now, there it is!
So it MUST BE THE GAME!

100% the game, definitely not my high speed broadband or my pc, that plays everything else fine. Funny how it was working perfectly before this latest update too?

im having the same issue, ryzen 3600 with an RTX 3080, tried it on my laptop which has a 2070 and have the same stuttering ♥♥♥♥ performance.

Same here! Started lagging after new update. Thought it was my internetconnection, but it seems to be just fine and to much of a coincidence.

Same, after the early game it becomes completely unplayable with horrendous constant freezing, rubberbanding and lag all around. This has been a issue for months now and im starting to get sick of it as this is one of the few games my partner actually enjoys, very aggravating.
