How do you overcome mp anxiety?
I tend to get too stressed out whenever I want to play mp and I end up not playing and I dont know how to avoid that, and It's weird because I have played other competitive games before but this is the only one that makes me feel that way

Always remember: Games are supposed to entertain. I am a competitive person so ranked games entertain me. However, rumor has it not everyone is like me (*gasp*).

So my first tip is always the same: If you fail at overcoming a dislike of a gamemode, your last resort is always to ignore it. Quick play is a good alternative.

Secondly, I personally found that when it comes to ranked games a general source of insecurity is a feeling of inadequacy. Maybe fire up some skirmishes against easiest AI and try getting down build orders until you're certain you can pull them off properly. Maybe play a few games against hardest AI to warm up.

Hope I could help.

Cheers,
Psy

You do not. You either like the rush that MP provides, or you do not and avoid it.

There is no obstacle, there is only good performance and bad performance, with varying degrees of both effort and talent.

This game is garbage for competitive play, don't know why anyone even bothers. Nostalgia, I guess.

Heres my guess
1) The other games you played are comparatively newer or more popular.
2) With bigger playerbase, there are way more casuals and noobs.
3) Its easier to reach a "decent level" (maybe statistically) despite not being the very best.
4) Thats not the case in aoe2, where there are lots of veterans in the smaller playerbase.
5) Your unconscious mind refuses to not be good at a game.

Or another guess, RTS is just stressful in nature with a steep learning curve.

there should be no anxiety involved. people that have that are ragers who cant handle losing. that's why they get anxious. its the fear of losing. healthy people dont have that issue. we just play and win or lose accept it. no need to blow a gasket and get all emotional over a video game. you can fall into that trap if you start caring too much about winning or losing games. gaming is all about having a good experience. if you only care about win or lose you have a type of disorder. being a pro gamer is different. thats about money and extreme competition. pros getting upset when they lose in a tournament or for money is different and that's because its their career and it matters. 99% of gamers arent playing for money or a career. were simply trying to have a good experience with a game. its the only way to be. tryhard ragers are the scourge of gaming. noone wants to team with them and noone likes it when we get paired with them randomly. for new players sometimes they get insulted by toxic idiot when said toxic idiot loses. that creates a bad environment for all gamers. its just something that we have to cope with and hopefully avoid those people. sometimes if my teammate is being rude ill just resign. that really makes them mad when its ranked. it makes me laugh though. its my way of getting back at them. so ask yourself this question. is it you thats causing your anxiety because you fear losing or is it other toxic idiots that are causing it by insulting you when you get teamed with them? either way its just time to let go of that mentality and start having fun.

I just view losing a ranked match as me getting the reward of an easier match next time, works great don't care one bit or get nervous at all, honestly you'll probably do better up to a certain point if you just legitimately do not care if you win or not

If you're specifically getting nervous because of too much stuff going on at once try playing a few diplomacy matches on ludicrous maps with high population limits, it might fry your nerves extra well done trying to follow what is going on but normal size matches will be much less stressful afterwards

Play on safe map with tight chokes points. 4v4 map like michi or amazon tunnel.

Personally, I dislike PvP in pretty much every game ever. It's not fun for me so I avoid it as a general rule. My understanding is that PvP is all about early rushing and nothing else.

I'm not competitive, though. I have no need to prove myself to random strangers, I don't need to be 'better' than other people to feel adequate. I have no illusions that I'd ever do more in PvP than let some caffeinated neck beard whale on me, and I have no desire to waste my time in this manner. There are always toxic people who get a kick out of stomping on noobs and I prefer to either avoid them entirely.

I have the same in 1v1s, but i don't have it in 3v3 and 4v4.
So maybe try a team game or set a closed map like Black forest as your favorite to make it a bit more relaxed?

You need confidence in yourself!

Maybe go check out T90Official on Youtube and watch his LOW ELO LEGENDS, playlist.

The whole point of that series is to show new players in a game, in real time, just how inexperienced most people are. And how easily a player can come back from nothing and still win the game. Its a great series and T90 is one of the most passionate about the game and makes you WANT to play more.

If there is anything still able to cause me any anxiety it is that I will show up on that series some day, might not be best example for stress for everyone lol

I mean.. the chances of you being the game that T90 is observing as hes streaming, is astronomical. You'd have a better chance of being stung by a jellyfish at a beach.

Watching Low Elo Legends is a fantastic way for new players to get an idea of what a "pro" like T90 ""expects"" to see.

I've been playing age of empires 2 for over 20 years. And i still learn things from watching Low Elo Legends.

I always feel like going to the real battle when attending AoE MP and that makes me super nervous :D As a psychologist, I find these topics (games and anxiety) sooo interesting - it is supposed to be fun and yet people stress out about it all the time. My recommendation is to untangle the roots of that anxiety and overcome it through time (more MP games = less anxiety) and to ask yourself related questions: why AoE and not all games? What is different? What does it remind you? What is the worst/best scenario that can happen? Etc. (best is to come up with your own questions and ideas and to think it through). Good luck:)))
