So my first tip is always the same: If you fail at overcoming a dislike of a gamemode, your last resort is always to ignore it. Quick play is a good alternative.
Secondly, I personally found that when it comes to ranked games a general source of insecurity is a feeling of inadequacy. Maybe fire up some skirmishes against easiest AI and try getting down build orders until you're certain you can pull them off properly. Maybe play a few games against hardest AI to warm up.
Hope I could help.
Cheers,
Psy
There is no obstacle, there is only good performance and bad performance, with varying degrees of both effort and talent.
1) The other games you played are comparatively newer or more popular.
2) With bigger playerbase, there are way more casuals and noobs.
3) Its easier to reach a "decent level" (maybe statistically) despite not being the very best.
4) Thats not the case in aoe2, where there are lots of veterans in the smaller playerbase.
5) Your unconscious mind refuses to not be good at a game.
Or another guess, RTS is just stressful in nature with a steep learning curve.
If you're specifically getting nervous because of too much stuff going on at once try playing a few diplomacy matches on ludicrous maps with high population limits, it might fry your nerves extra well done trying to follow what is going on but normal size matches will be much less stressful afterwards
I'm not competitive, though. I have no need to prove myself to random strangers, I don't need to be 'better' than other people to feel adequate. I have no illusions that I'd ever do more in PvP than let some caffeinated neck beard whale on me, and I have no desire to waste my time in this manner. There are always toxic people who get a kick out of stomping on noobs and I prefer to either avoid them entirely.
So maybe try a team game or set a closed map like Black forest as your favorite to make it a bit more relaxed?
Maybe go check out T90Official on Youtube and watch his LOW ELO LEGENDS, playlist.
The whole point of that series is to show new players in a game, in real time, just how inexperienced most people are. And how easily a player can come back from nothing and still win the game. Its a great series and T90 is one of the most passionate about the game and makes you WANT to play more.
I mean.. the chances of you being the game that T90 is observing as hes streaming, is astronomical. You'd have a better chance of being stung by a jellyfish at a beach.
Watching Low Elo Legends is a fantastic way for new players to get an idea of what a "pro" like T90 ""expects"" to see.
I've been playing age of empires 2 for over 20 years. And i still learn things from watching Low Elo Legends.
