How does ranked work?
Just started playing the game with my friend and neither of us know how to play very well. We're ran some games in skirmish, but we are just now feeling confident enough to get into ranked. After playing our first game, we got smashed!!! How exactly does the ranking system work? Are we in for thrashings like this every game?

-The first ten games you can consider as placements. You may get smashed. Have you guys tried the art of war tutorial?

-After those first ten it should feel much more even.

Learning a build order will also get you much more prepared. It's not a requirement, but it can make the game more fun because you know what you are doing.

Play at least 10 games first. I don't think the matchmaker function takes your actual ELO into account until you've played 10. I would speculate that the system uses 1000 as a default before using the "post-10 game" ELO.
Thank yall for the responses <3

AltF4 as much as you get the map you want to learn. Watch the replays, watch the better players on that map. If you don't know how a certain map is played, even if you are the better player you will lose.

Start with Arabia as it is the most common and AltF4 if you get any other map.

This is a poor piece of advice that doesn't take other players into consideration. Alt f4 a game of 4v4 and you essentially waste the time of 7 other players.

-Yeah and as a new player, having an open mind because you don't know what you like yet is the best way forward IMO.
