AOE is a strange game when it comes to that. We even have Incas in the game with European Units. But there are mods that change the look of units. Unique units do look like their civilisations actual units.

Yeah, it's one of my biggest pet-peeves with this game.

I guess this depends on the kind of player you are.
For competitive multiplayers, this is making things more comprehensible.
For non-competitive multiplayers or single players, it is indeed a missed opportunity.

It is worth remembering that the japanese's unique unit is a Samurai, and the perfect skin for Japanese Two-Hands and Champions would be something like a samurai. It would be 3 skins very similar, it would be very confused.

Other civs need some units for balancing reasons, but if we went looking, we wouldn't find any suitable skin for that unit.

For example, what would the Champion of the Incas look like? Can you imagine how strange a Champion would be using a spear? It would confuse people into thinking he has bonuses against cavalry just because of that skin. Remembering that this is just a example.

Mods can help you reskin units if you are a SP player, but like someone said above unit identification is extremely important for MP and aoe caters to this need by having units have a common appearance across civs.

I would not enjoy playing at all without being able to quickly tell what the unit is as I am already dumb enough without needing any help from the game to make me feel dumber.

The reason AOE 2 didnt differs the unit unlike the AOE 3 is the competitiveness reason. As much as i want it, but it would be confusing.

Lets see where AOE4 will bring us

I think the concept of infantry will no longer exist in Age 4.

This could be solved by a little check box hidden in the options. Regional unit skins would be disabled by default, but can be enabled by one click.

He could use any kind of club, mace or axe.
