"CD AI" is the old AI from the original game (also known as the Conquerors-AI).

"HD AI" is the AI of the HD-version and "AI" is the new AI of the Definitive Edition.

New ai learns from the way you fight it on moderate and above.
Will send units made specifically to counter the way you play.

An intelligent opponent! Computers get smarter and smarter.

The old AI is the only one that makes any sort of walls though unfortunately (and even then there are issues with them that crop up later on and the AI never bothers to fix them).

In comparison with hd AI, they are just getting smarter.
They garrision vils to kill scout.
They hit the units with vils only if they can kill them
They use siegeram to attack other siege weapons
They tend to help other players in a team match
a lot has been changed
Original AI cheats on the hardest difficulty. But they do not know how to counter units.

I've not played this before and like casual play and don't like how most people seem to play which is bash their huge army into his huge army. thus I don't want an aggressive AI that comes after me from the get go. which AI would be the most docile on Easy, CD, HD, or AI? thanks

I understand each iteration has improved AI but which is lesst likely to be overly aggressive at least early on? meaning the CD AI may be the dumbest but compensates by being overly aggressive. stuff like that but maybe this is something to odd to determine. might have to just experiment with each one.

The old AI rarely rushes, so you will have enough time to reach castle age peacefully. When attacking, it always sends neatly organized groups of soldiers instead of an endless stream of units and, as someone already mentioned, the old AI often builds walls around its towns.

If you want to play a relaxed game or if you want to learn how to build up your base without being under pressure too much, I would recommend the old AI.

But don't underestimate it! On the hardest difficulty and a large map it can get quite challenging if you let the CD AI reach imperial age. My favourite setting is 2vs2vs2vs2 with standard victory and random starting locations.

On the other side it is lacking strategies such as boar luring, for example.

I played a few matches against the new AI (not CD nor HD) on hard, they were 2v2 games. My friend and I built massive armies, and yet both of them, despite having awesome economies and tons of unit producing buildings/castles, their largest army sizes were 8 and 11... when we went to attack, there was nothing to fight against, just mow down their large cities..

I've seen this a few times already where the new AI doesn't bother building an army at all, and I'm not really sure why it happens

If you are looking to fight against better AI that is more competent you can try the AI fixes in the tread here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/813780/discussions/0/1660069015231709844/

I will post more tips on how to improve it there

Seems to me that the new AI doesn't always work - sometimes even rarely. Meanwhile, the HD AI tried to overwhelm me with a large army of MONKS. And that happened on Standard difficulty (Moderate is the hardest I can play against CD, often not even that against HD).

By the way, do you confirm that DE's AI is currently bugged or something, or does it depend on difficulty? I often play with all three AIs (Standard, again) but the HD one actually seems the better one amongst them.

I feel like after each update, AI is quite different. Some event i can manage to hardest AI opponent, while some others update event related i couldnt get to manage hardest opponent. Weird

haha try playing any of the modded campaigns from steam workshop, near freaking impossible even with cheats !! XD they jacked the ais on steroids and cocain

From my plays the HD AI is the only one that builds large armies, like really large. The new AI builds a large city but doesn't have enough troops to defend.
