No spectator mode?

In the age of empires hd edition. You can select spectator in the standard game and you can watch AI duke it out for your enjoyment and yet this new version seems to be lacking that feature. You can let an AI control your army but your stuck with that civilization. Is there something I'm missing or did they discontinued the spectator mode?

How to spectate games:
- Singleplayer: replace the player with an AI and start the game
- Multiplayer: go to the spectate tab and choose a game

This does not give player spectator controls, but instead human plays in tandem with the selected AI. This way the "spectator" cannot see further info about other players (population, resources, etc.).

Eh, wish age of empires 1 and 2 definitive editions have spectator mode. Maybe through a mod?

You can still spectate through the matchup area.
