Failed Graphics Benchmark
Wow this game is demanding. Admittedly, my system is about 5 years old, but I would have thought it would still be good enough to play this game but apparently not.

My computer failed the benchmark even with the graphics set to low. (Score 899)

This are my system's specs:
Processor: i5-4690 CPU @ 3.50 GHz
RAM: 8 GB
Graphics: GeForce 780 GTX

So what do I need to upgrade to play this game. Is the graphics card letting me down or is it my CPU or RAM or all of the above?

I tried the game with UHD graphics and consumes around 20Gb of RAM, so yes, it is poor optimized

You need to upgrade nothing, your GPU and CPU are better then the recommended parts on the store.

Interesting. I would have thought it should be okay. So could it be that the game needs a bit more work by the devs? I recall that AoE2 HD was really stuttery when it was first released and that was fixed with a patch soon after.

I cleaned up my computer a bit. My C Drive was nearly full so I moved my Steam games to another drive and deleted some large files and restarted with no other applications (other than Steam) open. .This time I scraped through the benchmark with a score of 1166.

But that was with everything on the lowest setting (bar resolution as I have a 1440p monitor and I don't want to go below that).

But because I am playing the lowest settings I think I am not using the enhanced graphics alas. So I could almost playing be HD as far as the graphics are concerned, I think.

If you're on Windows 10, your biggest problem is probably a lack of RAM. The game for me uses up to a maximum of 6 GB of RAM all on its own, so if your OS is also eating 2 to 4 GB and you've only got 8 GB RAM total, there probably isn't enough RAM for it. Also, the game for me uses up to 3 GB of VRAM (out of 4 GB), with default textures but Ultra graphics settings.

There are two ways to try and figure out if your CPU or GPU are bottlenecks. Check and see what the percentage use for each are when playing the game or running the benchmark (check in Task Manager). If usage is over 80% for CPU or GPU (or especially if usage is 100%), the bottleneck is probably there. Another way to test GPU is to increase or decrease graphics settings and see if that makes any difference. If the FPS doesn't change much, then the problem isn't your GPU or the graphics settings.

However, if your RAM or VRAM is getting completely used up (full), it is probably that (especially if your normal RAM is full).

PS. For now, ALWAYS turn off in game VSync. It's broken and cripples frames per second on even the best systems.

Except setting V-sync on in Nvidia Control Panel does nothing in this game.

I'd say your major issue is the 8 GB of physical memory, which leaves around 4 GB of memory for the game process to use.

The game is a major memory hog... probably due to the vast amount of very high resolution textures. If your graphics card runs out of video memory, it has to start using the syetem's main memory which slows down rendering dramatically, as well as reduces the amount of memory available for non-video purposes.

If you want to upgrade, I'd start with RAM.

Yup you're right. My mistake. But still, in game Vsync is borked.

So last night I updated the game (not sure if the devs have made any serious changes yet) and updated the drivers on my video card. I retook the graphics test and passed on low easily. So I set the test to medium (after restarting the game) and passed that quite comfortably too.

So I played a full game against the AI and it was great. I really like the changes. The only thing is the hotkeys have changed a bit so I need to learn the new ones. They're not that different from the old ones.

I wonder if there is a guide somewhere that explains how to take advantage of all the changes. For example I discovered that SHIFT + period selects all idle villagers and SHIFT + comma selects all military units (this is just like Rise of Nations). This is great. Plus farms can now automatically reseed (almost makes it too easy). I have friends who prefer Rise of Nations because they find the villager management too fidldly in Age of Empires 2, but I think these innovations might convert them to AoE2.

edit: oh and I disabled vsync via the nvidia control panel. Maybe that did the trick?

My computer passes the specs also so I do not know what the problem is. Why don't they put the DLC together with the game like they did on aoe1 DE ? This is absurd.

I will just go back to playing AOE3 till they fix this, and a the graphics are still beautiful on AOE3 and the gameplay is the same. So you are still playing AOE but only with the spanish discovering the americas.

A8-5600k, Gtx 750ti, 8gb ram
Full updated Windows 10 and nvidia drivers
No graphic dlc, 1360x768 resolution 1050 in benchmark and the game runs at 60-70 fps in campaign games

Play without the graphics dlc

No because It sucks without the HD DLC,and I might as well just buy the AOE2

That's ok I am playing AOE3 at the moment, and the graphics are just as pretty, and they work, and don't eat up RAM.

The game has quite a few other enhancements other than the 4K resolution that you get with the graphics pack.

I have 8GB ram too. But I have ordered another 8GB off ebay. So I am hoping that will improve things. But if I cannot use the EGP I don't really mind that much.

I have the same problem, i have GTS 250 and it does the same thing.

I was going to say that it's probably your graphics card... But then I looked it up and it benchmark's higher than my GTX 1050 TI and I run the game perfectly fine with a benchmark score of 1150 with maxed on settings at 1080p. Also, your CPU should be fine, though my same generation i7-4790 definitely scores higher. Your biggest problem might be your RAM.

Here's a few things to try...

First off, absolutely turn off in game v-sync if you have it turned on. It is massively bugged in this game and kills performance.

Run the game or benchmark at 1080p and see how it does. Also, compare your game benchmark scores when you have graphics settings turned down low vs cranked up very high. If there is little difference in the benchmark between the two, then it probably isn't your graphics card causing the slow down. For me, there's very little difference between maxed out graphics and minimum settings. If it's the same for you, then it's probably not your GPU holding you back. This holds true for most games.

I would recommend trying to keep track of your system usage when playing the game, either in the Windows Task Manager Performance tab or by using a third party tracking app like MSI Afterburner which will run a graphic tracking hardware usage while you play the game. From there you can see what is getting used the most. If your CPU or GPU usage is maxing out, then that's likely the problem. If your RAM usage is near or exceeding your limit, then you need more RAM.

Another suggestion is to go into Windows Power Settings and turn on High Performance mode and see if that helps. It'll make sure your hardware is running at full power.

Hope that helps. My best guess is that you need more RAM. This game is very RAM heavy. But try those other things and it might help or give you a more accurate idea of what the problem could be. Good luck!
