To all people who want removed the profanity filter in AoE2 DE
Yes sorry i'm noob. No i didn't play multiplayer yet. I'm still busy with story mode.
PS: You can chat with yourself in the singleplayer as well and test profanity xD

On the topic: Yes i agree profanity filter by big companies like Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo can be annoying. And they are dull, since u can't even write normal sentences, when spaced out words make sometimes random curse words.

Yes free speech is important, but big mainstream capitalistic companies like Twitter, Facebook, whatever platform don't care for free speech. They only care for drama and profit. Steam is not a platform to protest for XY things. It is simply for gaming. So why not talk about how we could nerf Archer rushes instead? :steammocking:

Random example: Monster hunter games on Nintendo platforms, even switch. Chatting on Nintendo platforms always sucked and not only due to profanity filter, but also bad usability & tiny screen. So whenever i play MH nowadays i always use Discord, which seems have sufficient voice chat quality

Yes writing directly into the ingame chat is faster and feels more comfy and some games like DST even add interactive emoticons to add to chat like  or even steam chat with like :meaty: code. But why not start future and use other voice app alternative?

I'm pretty sure even though lock down & cabin fever sucks, at least many people due to Cov-19 were able to try many video or text chat apps like Zoom or Jitsi, Facetime and whatever they all called

Simple fix: Why don't you guys used instead the literal millions of text / voice chat options out there?
We are not living in last decade anymore, nowadays a gamer has choice from many apps to communicate with gamer buddies.

Quick platform recommendations, which i tested and liked so far: Steam has built in text overlay & voice chat. If the mic quality or overlay seem overcomplicated for you:
https://steamcommunity.com/chat/

Why not use Discord app? It works on smartphones, web browser and you can even simply join as guest and don't even need account when someone send you server link ...

https://discord.com/new/download
Please tell me it is allowed on steam to recommend voice apps for gaming right?

Feel free to add more cool text / voice chat options below to play relaxed AoE2 comp stomp etc
What headsets or / setup / software do you use?

Vvvv vvvV

Sorry for wall of text, i hope i could be of help maybe?
happy gaming

When my brother and I game we use voice chat which is cool - but just playing random games on ranked there's no time to set up voice chat and/or a text chat app. Very inconvenient. So that's why I chat ingame - the profanity filter wouldn't annoy me if it wasn't so badly implemented.

so you wrote a whole book just to tell yous dont use the chat? omg were is the world going?
grraf Aug 1, 2020 @ 4:27am
Hoof boy where did u ever pop up from ?!... jokes aside tho here are a few solid reasons why other chatting apps/video/voice chat is not smth reliable/desirable:

1)if u need to alt+tab into some other app to type while the game is running u have just kissed good bye 20% of yr eco/army(as in geting owned by kt raids/onager shots--even if u all agree to pause sumfagot will always stealth unpause it and own yr ar$e just for the lolz )

2)Limited internet bandwidth/low CPU core counts will mean almost every game smb will lag the game for the entire team due to having the bare minimum needed specs before even piling up another cpu&net hungry app on top of it...

3)Are u sure u want to be subjected to anything ranging from a crying baby/death metal blasting full volume/flat mate enjoying some quality porn in the back ground ?!.... congrats now u can have all that and more by opting in to listen to the marvelous sound waves in yr mate's natural habitat :steamfacepalm:

4)Mac/Linux players(like myself) may not want/be able to natively use whatever voice/video chat app is currently most popular on Widows10

If u still don't see the issue after reading the above i'm amazed u managed to find yr way home the last time u went out...

dialectal hate speech is not censored! So if you want to be uneducated, go full uneducated by speaking in your area's dialect

Just get rid of the filter. It is that simple. It bans many non-offensive words that are understood by the age community to mean one thing not another for instance TC dropping or .douching

Reduce the filter. Some profanity is fine, but the rest of it is trashy, filthy or otherwise unpleasant.

Imagine having special censoring voice apps, which can detect, if you curse with voice and every curse will be just distorting loud BEEEEEPP sound in the chat xD

+agree
But i know no case of any game release, where the developer "improved" the online chat post release. So at this point people need to think of alternatives or maybe get into modding.

Actually no, this is a direct repost towards a closed thread about "free speech", but instead of flinging insults or ad hominem any random user, i try to give positive outlook and solutions.

I just feel in gaming some people rely too much on game developers and don't use custom third party programs / mods or external solutions enough!

Big mainstream developers like nintendo, sony or microsoft do always paper cut game developement with simple F schemes. So obviously the overal package will be bad and include profanity filters, bad online search browsers, bad ranked match making, bad story campaign splash screens.

For all those mainstream dev shortcomings there is counter nowadays. Players aren't simple sheeple consumers anymore, but they can get proactive and even further develop or alter their game experience thankfully. As long as you don't use arbitrary game streaming experiences like Strada etc

There modding will be much harder to implement etc

Btw i heard AoE2 DE does indeed support modding. So why nobody did a remove profanity filter mod or any chat mod / applications for AoE2 DE yet?

@grraf this is why modern gamers do multi monitor / gadget gaming. Either have a second monitor synched and have the desired voice chat app open there. Or just stick your smartphone with facetime open onto your monitor. Heck look just at what gadget twitch streamers use nowadays. Really? People complain that they have to "alt + tab" in the year 2020 ? oO

I hardly ever alt tab anymore (feels so last decade TBH), because all my apps are borderless windowed mode, and spread across the monitor / monitors anyway.

Yes with this method you can even have several games open without the need of alt tabbing EVER.

AOE II DE is server-based, not player-to-player. You send a message to the server and the server send to the other player.

There is a way to disable the filter for yourself, but it doesn't matter, even if you disable the filter and your partner disables the filter, the message will still be filtered on the server anyway. You'll see everything you wrote without filter, but your partner (who also disabled the filter) will see the message censored anyway.

Oh interesting, how to disable the prof filter then please? At least on my player side.

Look at this post. It says that if the other person disables it too, the problem is solved, but if it worked there wouldn't be so many people complaining. Besides that, as I said, it makes no sense the filter be only on each other's computers and not on the server. And I haven't seen anyone say it works either

Others have touched on it already but I'll make the point that the reason why a lot of people get so annoyed by the filter is because of how arbitrary some of the censored words are. I had a team game where I typed a message saying something like "blue go wall here" only to have the whole message appear as "**** ***." I then found out that the word "blue" is censored. Really? If the filter only targeted a handful of truly hateful and/or offensive words that 90% of people would agree are toxic and unneeded, then it probably wouldn't be getting the criticism it is. As it stands right now though, the range of 'banned' words is dumb and arbitrary and will result in numerous phrases getting censored in the middle of a game when you are just trying to communicate with teammates.

Thor II that used to work up til the jully patch when they changed it to pass the requests to api.ageofempires.com/textmoderation instead... but that is easily enough to scrap as well(can confirm its possible&functional to disable it--just target the domain(not its sub) further more its enough for you to cut access on yr end and others will receive the unfiltered message as well-->pretty sure its smth they overlooked and will change with a future patch/hotfix(what doesn't work is receiving unfiltered messages from others that aren't using the fix)....don't asks for links/guides as those will land me another warning or ban and at this point i just can't be ar$ed.
Redhead now why would a stand up guy such as yrself want to disable the awesome profanity filter its almost as if u think its a piece of crudware like most of use...
Regarding the multi monitor&smart phone setup my simple answer is this: after dealing with a noisy workplace for 8/12h a day the last f'ing thing I want to hear is smb live butchering the english language(best case scenario) or enjoy some loud death metal/rap along with half of the 'homies in the hood'... sorry i'm just not going to be that guy i value my sanity too much...:steammocking:
