Which AoE is most recommended?
So now that all versions have a Remaster or DE or whatever label of some kind, which would you say is the best version to get at this point if you would pick just 1? (Least glitches, most features, most fun, most balanced, etc.)

AoE DE, AoE2 DE, AoM EE, AoE3?

I do have to say I really enjoyed AoM back when I was a teenager, but I also do recognize this game was actually really messy, we just had a higher tolerance for bad programming back then because we didn't know any better, how does the EE version hold up regarding that?

I would go with rise or nations....lots more depth...than the reskinned rehashes of aoe..they were good back in the day....

The second without any doubt. AoE II is the champion, I would follow it with AoE III & lastly AoE (I'm still trying to find the unique units in that game).

I'm impressed someone actually likes Rise of Nations at all: it's just about spamming. That's not strategy. Civ 5 has the same features & it has a way better gameplay.

AoE 2 of any version is just a game of fast spamming and good micro/macro and is only better played in multiplayer, to which i never wanted to play and compete as I’m not a fast player. Depth wise, AoE is way below Rise if Nations in terms of mechanics and strategy.

If 0ad pathfinding and formations are improved imo should be better than AoE2 and it free and can be played on Mac as well!

AoE II is by far my favorite. One that I do like, that I think is quite underrated and possibly forgotten about is "Empires: Dawn of Modern World" not made by the same company but was a fun game from what I remember.

As far as AoM EE goes, its quite bad imo. It runs pretty bad. If you own the disc version just play that. (it runs better but still bad) Steam version needs some performance patches. Unless you don't mind "laggy" or "studery" games that is. Hope this helps.

Wait for 3, its the best in my opinion... graphics are better and gameplay for skirmish games is better

If you're looking for competitive play, aoe 2. Or if you're just looking for an ai that can put up a fight without cheats. Anything even resembling competitive play tbh.

Otherwise its kind of a toss up depending on what you're looking for. I'd pick rise of nations or aoe 3 for casual skirmish games personally (mostly because I like muskets and rifles). Rise of nations is better though, and I don't think aoe 3 DE is out.

Rise of Nations is a great game but AoE2 is a deeper game. Or at least, the depth of AoE2 has been explored and documented to a much greater extent than Rise of Nations.

There are so so many more tutorials and commentated games for AoE2 than Rise of Nations. The community is much larger meaning there a bigger talent pool to draw upon for AoE2 than Rise of Nations. If you go on YouTube and look for content about Rise of Nations, you won't find much alas.

That said I really enjoy Rise of Nations. But I think that AoE2 has a lot more that you can bite your teeth into.

As far as how AoE2 compares to the rest of the series. No comparison. It is the classic in the series. Rise of Nations is better than either AoE1 or AoE3.

One thing I do agree though is that Rise of Nations is a good game for casual players. It is less fiddlly and micro-oriented than AoE2.
