I would go with rise or nations....lots more depth...than the reskinned rehashes of aoe..they were good back in the day....
I'm impressed someone actually likes Rise of Nations at all: it's just about spamming. That's not strategy. Civ 5 has the same features & it has a way better gameplay.
If 0ad pathfinding and formations are improved imo should be better than AoE2 and it free and can be played on Mac as well!
As far as AoM EE goes, its quite bad imo. It runs pretty bad. If you own the disc version just play that. (it runs better but still bad) Steam version needs some performance patches. Unless you don't mind "laggy" or "studery" games that is. Hope this helps.

Otherwise its kind of a toss up depending on what you're looking for. I'd pick rise of nations or aoe 3 for casual skirmish games personally (mostly because I like muskets and rifles). Rise of nations is better though, and I don't think aoe 3 DE is out.
Rise of Nations is a great game but AoE2 is a deeper game. Or at least, the depth of AoE2 has been explored and documented to a much greater extent than Rise of Nations.
There are so so many more tutorials and commentated games for AoE2 than Rise of Nations. The community is much larger meaning there a bigger talent pool to draw upon for AoE2 than Rise of Nations. If you go on YouTube and look for content about Rise of Nations, you won't find much alas.
That said I really enjoy Rise of Nations. But I think that AoE2 has a lot more that you can bite your teeth into.
As far as how AoE2 compares to the rest of the series. No comparison. It is the classic in the series. Rise of Nations is better than either AoE1 or AoE3.
One thing I do agree though is that Rise of Nations is a good game for casual players. It is less fiddlly and micro-oriented than AoE2.
