AoE and AoE II Definitive on Windows 8.1?

Hey guys, I really want to buy both games for my dad since he is a huge fan but I can't find a good information on if it's actually going to run on his Windows 8.1 computer as it says it requires Windows 10. I want to try to spare him from having to update to newest windows and hope it's not the only solution. I'll greatly appreciate any advice.

If he doesn't have a gaming rig with at least 16GB of RAM, don't bother. Also win8.1 might not work after the next patch so the safer bet would be to buy HD (2013) edition.

They do work for now but there is no official support... and so far some optimization patches have had bad side effects for win7&8 users(stutter&crashes)... all in all its unlikely to be smth viable long term...
On a side note tho with a decent rig i5&gtx 1050 u can get the game running flawless(well above the required mplayer benchmark results) trough proton...
I for one don't even use widows and instead i'm using an arch linux rig with steams proton and for now i have no issues running it(well no 4k for me but i couldn't care less about all that fluff...)
