Also, this is from before the big patch, so not sure if they have changed this or not.

It seems a problem with proton under linux. In Windows the lan option is available. Probably BattleServer.exe isn't working. When I stop battleServer.exe on Windows i have the same behaviour.
I've exactly the same issue. I've search everywhere how make LAN game. It's was finaly a bug…

I use Proton under Linux (Archlinux).
So you got BattleServer running now under linux? In the links you posted, there's no solution to make it work under linux.
