Very high hard drive requirement?
Question. AOE2 currently lists 2 GB required hard drive space. Why in the world does this thing list 30 GB as the required space?!?! 3 campaigns and 4 civs, especially considering how many civs and campaigns are in the original game, do not take up that much room.

As a guess, it has all the campaigns + a brand new one and is 'remastered' with 4k textures and other stuff I'm not actually privy to but that would be my guess.

Don't forget the remaking of the music, sound file can easily get very big.

It's mostly the 4k graphical assets which are obviously huge files by necessity.

^ it's the graphics. Way, way higher resolution, some more animations etc.

As mentioned, graphics back then were much smaller file sizes. Software doesn't get very large even in complex games. All the gigabytes nowadays are assets from the textures, models, and sounds. Which is why you can still have an awesome game that has very little hard drive room if they just sacrifice the graphics or make them low def cartoons.

There's also the fact that much more was done to optimize things back then.

Now you can just slap on some uhd files, and you don't even have to bother with compressing em. It's why so many games these days can hit 60 - 100gigs.

The few games that do optimize these days, do it out of necessity. Just look at doom 2016, the original textures for the game were petabytes in size. Petabytes.

I'm looking at a repack I found somewhere and it says it removes stuff like foreign languages. The entire unpacked thing is 12.7GB according to the uploader. Could it be that they bloat the game with languages you'll never use?

No, that's the game's size. Without the UHD DLC.
