Back when the game came out this was acceptable but nowadays having the same visuals for units is just cheap and silly.
Having only one 'faction' and the same visuals for units will be jarring for new players who are used to the diversity of every other strategy game out there.
-No.
on a serious note though, did they confirm that somewhere?
They did.
-How many "civs" and unit types did they have? I'm pretty sure this wont officially change because you would want to easily know a 2hander is a 2hander and not have to remember that many more permutations.
You don't need an unique set for each civ, only a few different shared sets: European, Middle-Eastern, Asian, Meso-American, and African, for example.
It's already officially announced that the Steam Release will lack the Workshop.
