No shield?
So far from what I've seen the player doesn't fight with a shield. I thought Greek warfare pretty much revolved around the hoplon (shield) and spear. To the point where the shield was intrinsic to Ancient Greek Warfare. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Hey all,

Jonathan Dumont, Creative Director for Odyssey, went over the decision to not utilize shields as the player in a recent AMA on Reddit.

"Yes, Spartans did use shields, but our Hero is a mercenary, not a Spartan soldier. Our gameplay is much more versatile than that of Origins and a shield was not suited to it, so we replaced shields with dodging, rolling and parrying mechanics. The parry mechanics gives a bit more of feel of old school AC Fight of counter attack, while still retaining fight mechanics of Origins. I can't speak for the future of the franchise for social stealth and parkour."

The game is meant to be more offensive than defensive in combat, so the devs removed shields.

Greeks used shields in open warfare because they practiced linking them with the people around them to form shield formations. You however are playing a solo character hence no shield.

The Devs in a Gameplay Video, but i really hope they give us the option to use a shield and the hidden blade for the old AC fans.

Yeah they mentioned there was no shields. Pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying seeming as the key to greek warfare was the phalanx, and the key to the phalanx was a shield. :/ They could have just had the spear tip as a mini weapon like the hidden blade that you can use, but your main weapon can still be say a sword/spear/etc and a shield.

This was pretty much what I was hoping for when the game was announced. I wasn't expecting the game to be fully accurate in terms of history. But I mean come on, not having a shield in Ancient Greek warfare is just weird. At least they couldve made the shield optional so you could still fight two handed if you wanted to. Always pictured myself playing the game as a defensive fighter with shield in hand to start off with, and then being able to switch to another weapon on the fly like in origins.

Unfortunatly at this point even if they wanted to, they might not have enough time to implement a shield into their system if enough people requested it.

They probably wouldn't. They claimed at E3 that they got rid of it so the player moves around more but TBH, I was always dodging in and out of combat and around the back of the enemy. And is still had a shield, it's just a bad design choice made by Ubisoft. If the game was set in say, Japan, it would make sense for there to be no shields, but Greece? Ridiculous :/

Maybe some Agents of Shield DLC for 69.99 bucks

Why would you be in the middle of a phalanx though? Hopefully you'd not be relegated to front line foot soldier #1532.
