WarPlan: No major bugs. Easy to learn system, good tutorials. Moves fairly fast (built fo game play and strategizing). Can play numerous countries. Covers all of the War in Europe.
Unity of Command II: Very clunky control system (CTRL + Mouse wheel). Tutorial references manual, which I couldn't find (it is available, and the location has been identified on this forum. I didn't see that until later). Can (currently) only play axis. Some gliches with new supply and HQ systems. Only plays Western Front. I requested a refund (until at least things repaired/changed/fixed).
UofC II is not UofC I, if you have never tried UofC I, try that one first.
I assume this is more like OOB rather than Strategic Command WW2. I like both of them but have played more SC recently - but PBEM not SP. How's the AI compared to OOB?
The AI in UoC2 is one of best AIs I ever encountered in the wargame. On higher levels, at least
Correct, OOB and UC2 are generally similar, just like SC3 and WP are generally similar.
All four offer distinct gameplay.
I don’t want to give you uniformed advice - my mileage on UC2 is low - but as much as I like OOB, I think UC2 offers a little more depth (that might change with more gameplay).
I like SC3 WiE a lot, maybe more than SC3 WaW because of the more detailed maps, roughly 2x scale, and main theatre. It is an easy to get into hard to master kind of experience. Because the game is still being balanced I have delayed playing a full campaign, instead doing three 1939-1940 runs - basically Poland and France. It is ok, the AI does an acceptable job as the Allied defender, give it some bonus and you’ll even have to think, especially against France.
Ok, one thing that think all these suffer from is a lack of stacking. It is a shuffle match.
With games that allow proper stacking you can create a genuine Schwehrpunkt, which is basically missing in all these games. In UC2 and OOB you might not miss it that much, IM SC and WP it sometimes is felt - especially the scale of WaW and WP, a little less so in WiE.
The WP dev is a dedicated guy who is very eager to create a great game.
If he has a flaw it is that he’s probably too involved with the community - lest he run out pf steam trying to answer each question and address each detail (his vision might get lost in well intended play balance changes).
DISCLAIMER - that’s ME projecting MY views.
It is a cop out but both UC2 and WP are worth your money.
Do you want an OOB / PzK or SC kind of game, let that decide what you buy.
In that sense it is more a board game.
