I was asking myself exactly the same question yesterday!
To be honest, for me, as a new player, that's not very helpful since it's almost impossible to match every symbol that I see in the game to these written descriptions.
But briefly: + means you get a bonus card, HQ means you get an HQ upgrade, S in a box means you get a specialist step, the oil drums mean you get better supply (the percentage chance to supply a unit, seeat the very top middle of the ui) and other letters usually mean you either just get the prestige bonus (all bonus objectives always give some prestige) or sometimes it gives you an advantage in your next mission (your units are positioned better at the start of the mission giving you an advantage). I think that's it.
