Economy and Food don't add up at all... frustrating
Make farms and offices, have enough power. Doesn't matter you'll lose -40 to -88 to theft and there's nothing you can do about it. Once you go under.. it doesn't matter if you buy food from the trade portal or not, you won't recover. Fish? Salad? Grapes? DOES NOT MATTER you're people starve even with 3-4 wheat farms and 150 pop. RIDICULOUS.

Am I missing something?

theft = lack of justice.
build court/town hall/parliament/banks
Before you assume there's nothing you can do about it, why not just ask without salt ?

This game makes it tempting to grow population quickly without sustainable infrastructure, and it's easy to spiral downwards in the early game if you don't go steady.

With 150 pop you shouldn't be building offices yet. Focus on getting the basic needs covered. Build an airport to produce more drones to pick up food etc. because the 3 drones you start with become overwhelmed fairly quickly. Build a courthouse or town hall to increase Justice to prevent stealing. For income build town squares and markets (2 of each is good to start with) and sell excess matter/water/food through the trading portal. Then look at pushing the population to 300ish.

that's actually fairly good advice. ♥

+1
Though I am worried about the marketplaces. They give really good money but in return they suck up grain like a month long starved cow. 2 might be a bit too much but that does depend on your food production. Maybe I'm a bit too sensitive since I got bitten by it accidentally when I made 2 and cleaned out my grain once.

This is true, but the tutorial tells you to build an airport way too late. It is actually something you should prioritize very early, because your starting 3 drones are woefully inadequate.

I sort of understand and agree, it's why I am here answering questions best I can, it's kinda hard to get into :<
Tbh I still learn things after over 100 hours.

Sorry but my frustration comes from the way these games all now follow similar tropes. The "haha things are going to break and screw up the whole city" mentality. All too often there's some freak thing that will overload the chain of water/power etc when the city gets big. I keep getting to 200-300 pop. And like ... Uranium stops working, the Nuke plant stops working, now there's no water/food. Even with 10 drones. The city never compensates and everything just dies. And it does NOT spring back into shape. The credit earning system is woefully difficult. If I shouldn't worry about offices until pop 150 then how do you make money? Farm and sell products? Nice idea except underwater farms, underwater uranium, and sometimes other farms STOP working. Here's my conundrum, why is wheat the only measure of "food". Grain falls under the suggested mark and your prestige falls and everyone flees. It doesnt matter how much fish and salad and grapes or wine you have. It seems pretty ridiculous.

I keep playing this game because I like it, and I do like a challenge I just want to understand its mechanics more.

I have never had a building simply "stop working." Does it have enough required inputs? Do you have enough drones? Do you have enough workers? Is the building enabled?

The best way to ensure that you never get into these problems is to make sure that your production of all critical resources (so water, food, vitamins, uranium, and batteries) are greater than your demand by a comfortable margin with buffer in stock. The easiest way to make sure this is happening is to keep track of the production/consumption rates in the storage menu and build more production ahead of time before you run out. If you're making a housing expansion, build even more of these resources.

And of course drones, and drone techs, are your top priority. I personally would not research anything else before getting all drone-related techs.

Oh man. I went about this completely reverse to everything above and had minimal problems. ;)

I built a bank (single) from the start and just a few houses. Enough grain farms to feed everybody, a courthouse when the stealing got too rife and started in on the research... expanded from there.

Learned the hard way how bridges suck out a citys income and that trying to deliver all income to a single portal is futile...

... it's the journey that was enjoyable. :)

Your cities were a bit strange though. Modded? lol. It was like you chucked everything into it just to test it out.

^^ that is exactly what I was trying! :)
