I read some useful advice to briefly release all direction controls just prior to jumping back from the wall.

You can also download save games for any checkpoint, so you don't have to skip the whole level.
You always want to align the camera so that you're looking along the wall, not at the wall. The camera has a tendency to wobble back and forth if it's facing the wall which could screw up the jump. With the camera set up, all you need to do is push forward and backward to run and then left or right to jump in a direction. I can do it every time now without even having to think about it.
You have to swing forth and the moment Lara truns around just release the controls. She sort of pauses for a moment before she runs back. So once she's turned and is about to run back, press left + jump (if the camera is watching along the wall). If the camera is opposite to the wall, then it's back + jump
