My guess is you are fighting too aggressively

And what weapon are you using? Personally i think the game is much easier if you use a one handed weapon and a shield. With a shield you can defend faster, need less timing, less enemy animation knowledge and less stamina compared to dodge rolls. 2 handed weapons provide more reach and damage though.

Also, early in the game, fang weapons are usually the best choice, since they deal decent damage and are easy to acquire. So if you don't have anything better from somewhere (you likely don't), make the fang version of your weapon of choice.

Play safer, try to do enemies one by one, Only hit after your oponent tried to hit you. Mobs in this game love to attack at the same time as you attack but if they just ended to attack they can't instantly relaunch it.
i wouldrecommend you to use lance weapons in early game, they are pretty safe, you can use the harpoon that you can get in early game

that was my inital response to the game, because i figurte i cant steam roll everything like normal. it didnt go well for me. I keep running into enemies that literally steam roll me after 1 or 2 hits.

i think im going to go have a crack at spears.

Another way - cheese it, no mercy. If you are fighting near ledges - bait enemies near them, block the incoming barrage and yeet them off, afterwards you can pepper them with arrows.
If there are parts of the environment that create sharp corners - bait them in and get them stuck, afterwards use a reach weapon and hit them through the wall.
Run circles around them to bait attacks and counterattack.
Other enemies nearby? Good, clash them together.
Set traps if you can, start with sneak attacks from range, be a sneaky backstabing gremlin without honor nor mercy.
A fight is too difficult? Run away...

To reset aggro, and then come back to sneak a blade in their side, repeat if necessary.
There is no glory in death and victors write history.
Think not of how to play the game, think instead of how to break the system.

Early game I would suggest a Fang Greataxe (high damage, high impact, bleed and fast atack speed / move set) - and upgrade it into a Horror Greataxe (even better in all stats).
I would not recommend any(?) sword (no impact) or maze (to slow). Lately I've come to love the Dreamer Halberd...

Try to pull/bait a single enemy out of a group. If it fails run away. Rinse and repeat.
Most Enemies have a 2-3-hit-attack as standard, wait (strafe/block) for it to end then attack. With high-impact-weapons you will do well afterwards...

... Aside of collecting ressources most (exterior) mobs can simply be ignored (especially if you have your goal set on something else).

And (split screen) COOP can be used to share / gift (and duplicate) weapons'n'stuff between Characters or Players...

There are two very important aspects to Outward's combat system :

- The stability of the enemies, if you can deal enough impact to make your enemy reach 50% stability (white bar under HP) you will stagger them on every hit under 50%, and at 0% they are knocked down. You can quickly deal impact with the help of skills (kick and/or special skill of the weapon category you're using) or with buffs. Abuse this, as this is a rather safe way to burst enemies while they can't fight back.

- Don't trade hits with enemies. It's never worth it except if you have an end game armor (which you don't). To avoid trading hits, you bait attacks, the easiest and safest to bait is when they run after you and deal what looks like a heavy attack. Easy to dodge, and you can hit safely after that basically everytime.

Other quick tips : avoid as much as possible fighting with multiple enemies at the same time, it is a headache and you will most likely take a lot of damage or die. If you want or have to do it anyway, use traps to quickly kill enough enemies so there is 1 left that you can fight.
Also, don't forget you can drop your backpack to roll, it is very handy.

Also probably worth mentioning that block is very strong, if you're used to dark souls or something - block prevents 100% of physical melee damage at the cost of stamina even if you're using a weapon and not a shield (well, except fist weapons). Shields just drain less stamina on the block, so 2-handers are pretty great.

Getting better armor is very important for taking the hits, try to at least get makeshift leather or something early, then half-plate is a pretty big bonus (you'll take half damage from hyenas compared to being naked) and blue sand armor (or other crafted if you travel) are a pretty big upgrade. Er, guess you read the guides so you probably know that part.

You are just pretty bad at actually fighting more than one enemy early game though - something like a bandit or hyena does roughly the same damage you do and has roughly the same health, so taking on anyone 2v1 in a fair fight is probably not going to end well.
