I suggest you craft a Gold-Lich mace and shield (You can craft them in Cherso if you know how :P )
When you say "i can't trade damage" i suppose that means you take too much damage when you get hit while you are already hitting some foe : the way of close combat takes dedication and time, you have to learn ennemy patterns and downtimes you can exploit. Try not being hit at all, shield really helps a lot.
But unless you wear heavy armor, most of ennemies will 2-3 shot you if you let them reach you ;)
One handed swords are easier to use than maces, especialy the central mouse click after 1 or 2 left mouse click : this is an evasive moove, and swords tends to be more "agile" than other 1h weapons (so easier to learn at start i think). Btw i love maces, they hit so hard in the white stability bar, if you like maces, go for it!
Hope you have fun !
yea. My DKS1 mentality of Maxing havels and letting the enemy run into the brick wall that is my massive mallet really doesnt work in this game lol.
There's a kind of hidden dungeon that has Gold-Lich minions in Chersonese where you can get the mechanisms
