The game does not have a you are here pop up on the map. You need to look at the terrain around you for landmarks, find them on your map and orient yourself based on that.

it doesn't take long to learn the area using landmarks and your compass. i'm sure that a mod exists if it's too hard for you.

Use landmarks, its not really that hard. If you leave a city, find that on the map and use your compass to get a rough estimate of where you are and to track your movement.

This is really really easy.
Just look up a bit, check for any landmark.
Then see the directions at compass.

Now you can tally back with your "M" key
