I guess at this point go back and get it? It's in a chest in the basement close to the mines where you woke up.
Make sure to not take too long, enemies and areas (except for unique enemies) reset after spending seven in-game days outside of the area (outside meaning loading screen type of outside). Containers will also reset during that time and your backpack and all possessions will be lost.
Suggestion: go back to town, avoiding ALL FIGHTS, grab replacement stuff from your stash, take roughly... 25ish spike traps and tripwires, and trap the hell out of the area before you start the fights with the leaders.
Obviously the heavy armored knight in the entrance Crock, I suggest trapping the ground next to him before starting the fight as he'll spawn on the other side of the room and have to run through them.
There is a witch up top Balira, starting a fight with her also starts with the two guards in her room, I suggest trapping the area outside of the room and then running IMMEDIATELY through the trapped area when the fight starts, the guards will follow but not her, be careful she also does a frost nova like the mage in the other big bandit camp.
In the Basement there is Rospa, man in heavy red, shogun looking armor. Trap the area in front of him and IMMEDIATELY run away when the fight starts as he has 3 helpers that will try to help him during the fight, but they are on the upper floor so Rospa will run through the traps and die first then you just have to deal with the three Kazite helpers he had (I suggest leading them through the fortress to break them up a little bit.)
And before you say anything about "I shouldn't need to look up a wiki guide to beat the area" I found this out by dying to Crock and having to get my bag back from the chest (I didn't jump down the hole I explored my options like they want you to, the hole is there but the intent is to maybe get your belongings first), then proceeding to kill everyone in the fort by being a coward and making several miles of traps through the fort and running everyone through them.
This game is all about trial and error, try being more patient and inventive, you'll go far, I believe in you.
I had all my stuff before i jumped into the hole. I even went back to the dungeon to double check. All the guards i killed still dead with the loot i didnt want on them, zero backpack to be found anywhere.
Like i said, some real ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that designed this game... they must be a ton of fun at parties.
Back story, i fought 3 guys outside the fort, i died to the 3rd guy OUTSIDE FORT, it loaded me in the prison. ZERO CHOICES TO BE MADE HERE.... seems devs have their own idea of whats "fun". " remember that time, we designed the encounter so that if they died they ended up in prison?" " yeah and than we will take away all of their stuff they spent tedious hours collecting", yeah that will be so cool, your such a good story developer"
NOT!!!!!!!
But yeah, trash talking is effective too, definitely helps to fix problems.
Edit: Is it on your compass anywhere or actually gone from the game 100%? If it's not anywhere than it needs to be reported as a bug.
For most of the game, when you die, you spawn near you backpack with an icon on you radial wheel.
