Actually they die in combat long before they expire naturally on my spellcaster. I rarely have to worry about the timer running out unless I've gone back to town or rested.
And having played a lot of necromancers on Skyrim as well, I'd say that's basically the same. Though it's less like skyrim's necromancy and more like skyrim's summoning, but with the requirement of a human corpse.
edit: Now, that said, I wouldn't mind more options with this regard. There's a lot of questionable gaps in Outward's spell combos in general. Currently Conjure + fire or ice sigil does nothing. It'd be cool to get some kind of elemental summon from those.
