Can steam and GOG users play together?

I was going to buy the game for my friend but it looks like I missed the sale. It's still on sale on GOG, though. If I buy my friend the game on GOG can they still play with me?

Yes, you can play with anyone who purchased the game on PC, so it doesn't matter which platform it is.

How does it work? I only see split screen and open to friends. Obviously if I'm on steam and he's on GoG we won't be on the same friends list.

You don't use the Steam overlay or friend list to add anyone.

You log your character, open the game and type the name, for example: "Coop". Your friends logs his character, clicks on "Join game" and types it exactly as you wrote it. Then the game puts him into your world.

You just have to be on the same region in game settings.

So the name of the world is basically like the password as well? How is it hosted?

Yes. It's hosted via game servers iirc.
