What happens when you die?
I can't seem to find any real information about how the death mechanic in the game works, and it's one of the biggest things holding me back from dropping $60 on the game. I've read that sometimes a god will intervene and bring you back, or that you might be captures etc. instead, but is "death" always a survivable mechanic? can you always continue after your character dies?

There seems to be a random number of scenarios at death from what Ive seen so far. I cant say Im a fan as Ive lost my back pack due to this random element as some scenarios spawn you with no equipment (enslaved) etc. Backpack is meant to spawn with you eventually (if you keep dying) but mine didnt (6 hours effort gone). Location seems to play some part as some death scnearios are locked to certain areas.

When you die in normal mode, a random event happens based on a bunch of stuff, location, whatever killed you, etc. If some monster saves you from a pistol shrimp, for example, you'll spawn in his cave with your stuff next to you, then he'll offer you one of 4 things, a backpack and a spell are two of the four, don't remember the others. In hardcore mode, you have a 20 or 40 percent chance of permanent death (forget which) and your save getting deleted. It loads a screen to trick you into thinking you survived, then it tells you you dead forever gg.

yeah a random event will occur depending on your location and how you died for example being killed by slavers will result in you most likely being a slave. etc

As said above, whenever you die, the game gives you a "defeat Scenario" that is influenced by:

1) Where you got defeated (ie, if you died near a bandit camp, you're more likely to be taken prisoner
2) What defeated you (ie, if you were killed by hyenas you're more likely to wake up in the hyena den)
3) How many times you've been defeated without resting (The more you are defeated, the more likely it is that you'll be taken back to the nearest town, and possibly get healed up at the inn)

You might be saved by someone, you might be captured by bandits and have to get your equipment back and escape on your own, you might be dragged to an animal's den, etc. But yeah, you will always survive the encounter and be able to continue.

The intention is so that your failures become part of your story.

The only way to perma-die is by playing Hardcore Mode, where you have a 20% chance of dying when defeated (the game deletes that save file if you perma-die)

in the normal mode its random unless you spam die....ALOt in a very short time period "like me dieing 17 times to bandits in their camp" then it will spawn you outside with your pack an almost everything you had before. seams like if you get to far in over your head it will just say...ok...here you go...go away

your stuff is always in a chest nearby
in bandit camp you have to look for the chests in tents

The game can't perma kill you in normal mode....but it can hurt you in other ways :(
(RIP my backpack that was trapped in Berg for almost 14 hours)

I think it's worth the price asked though, death always felt kind of exciting to me, you never know what you're going to have to deal with. Even the slave scenario that people seem to be complaining about isn't that bad. Your gear is all nearby in an easily accessible room and you have to do a little bit of role playing to find a way to escape without straight up killing everyone.
Plus you can learn backstab for free!
