Sword mace or Axe?
Just curious what peoples opinions are. I have been enjoying the mace but was wandering why I would choose a sword over a mace

Go with whatever moveset you like the most, i use two handed most of the time. But i do use swords when one handed, i like how they look mostly. Also suggest you look up what skills they have so you can maybe pick based on that as well.

Greataxe is probably the best of the melee weapons. It has fast attacks has high impact and they do really solid damage.

Greataxe > Spears > Everything else.
Spears early game while youre still learning movement and combat so you dont take as much damage

Depend on the skill you choose.
Ex, if you want to be melee/magic/anti magic type, go for one handed mace and shield.
Absorb ennemy's casting magic with mace skill, then trow it back with the "battlemage" (not sure it's called sorcelame in french) last skill.

There is almost no reason to use a single handed weapon over a two handed weapon in this game the twohanded variants have superior range damage and impact while having similar attack speeds.Unless you need to use an offhand.

Out of one handed weapons I preferred the axe, as it seemed to be the fastest. The 'heavy' or 'special' or whatever attack delivered 2 very quick hits after 1-2 normal hits. I wasn't very fond of it's learnable attack ability, it didn't seem to affect several opponents, but I liked using magic or the chakram beside normal weapon attacks anyways.

Well the reason is
"if you want to be melee/magic/anti magic type, go for one handed mace and shield.
Absorb ennemy's casting magic with mace skill, then trow it back with the "battlemage" (not sure it's called sorcelame in french) last skill."

Without a free hand you can't use flamethrower or chakram. For those the 1 handed weapon is the way to go. If you want to keep switching, you have to reserve 3 quick slots just for the weapons.

I edited my post before you responded with unless you need to use offhands.

Hey OP, just wanted to add my two cents. I just "completed" a Heroic Kingdom playthru as a 1Hand/Shield Spellsword/Merc/Rogue. Once you've got a good mace, there really isn't any reason to go sword/axe unless you like their exclusive skills. Specifically, enchanting the Skycrown mace is pretty absurd damage. Throw on some boons/potions/shield skills for defense and you're ready to crush the world!

The only reason to use anything that is NOT a mace is using a two handed weapon:

I firmly believe that among 1h weapons the mace is the best, while the among 2h weapons it is arguably the worst.

The difference between 1h maces and 2h maces is that among 2h's maces sacrifice damage (and range compared to some 2h's) for superior impact, while among 1h's maces sacrifice nothing for superior impact AND superior damage.

The 1h mace, on top of being statistically superior to swords and axes, has the best synergy with the shield;

1. the mace's LH combo: it is very effective at following up a block, especially compared to the sword, the Axe Heavy is roughly equal to the Mace LH chain because of it being a 3 hit, but it's a bit slower over-all so less safe.

2. Shield skills:

-Shield charge applies a lot of impact dmg and confusion, confusion increases impact dmg from attacks, maces deal the most impact dmg of any 1h weapon (they even deal more impact than some equivalent 2h weapons)

- Gong Strike requires an infused weapon, Mace Infusion provides.

In the short time this game has been out the consensus has been that 1h weapons are generally inferior to 2h weapons, but i honestly believe this is due to people underestimating just how good the Mace+Shield combo is. Shield Charge is one of the best skills this game has to offer for impact builds, blocking allows you to get bigger safe punishes than rolling (you recover faster) and shields are obviously the best choice for blocking.

Shields are also Ridiculously good for early-game builds assuming you unlock the first shield skill for +15 stability (and later the second, the mighty shield charge) from the Kazite trainer.

The thing is, 1H axe special attack applies -25% physical resistance debuff, basically increasing the damage. In early game that allows you to do more damage with 1H axe than 1H mace.
Otherwise I agree.
