Nope
You must buy your skill from a local NPC.

You spend the first hours hunting and foraging and crafting until you make enough money to get decent weapons and armor. Then, if you’re not ♥♥♥♥, you wreck face and win the game.

If you’re ♥♥♥♥, you lose all your money and items and start from zero.

There are skills you can learn from trainers. So while going out and killing enemies won't earn you "XP", you can earn money, and in turn, learn new skills. If you want to learn a specific skill, you gotta find the right trainer.

Past learning skills, there is also gear, with a pretty varied set of equipment types. There is a clear progression of gear, but some things have alterante abilities to make them preferable.

It is definitely slow, but there is also certainly progression.

Silver coin is basically your form of XP. You can spend that silver on Material Upgrades (Weapons/Armor) or on Skills at trainers. Beware that you can only Fully unlock 3 trainer's Skill trees so choose wisely as there is no respec.

You get some stat boosts for completing faction missions but everything else comes from the trainers. Between skills and getting better gear you go from dying if something looks at you wrong to practically being a walking god of death. Progression in the beginning is rather slow though since most things take a lot of money and you start off with practically nothing so it's an uphill struggle to be able to kill stuff to get stuff to sell for money and then buy skills and better gear.

It honestly feels like this game punishes you for no reason. I feel their current system would be acceptable if they allowed you to level by fighting traditionally with the exception of learning skills from trainers at a price. Currently you just dish out a lot of silver for a few skills :/ I couldn't bring myself to continue this game as it's far too slow and it feels like a glorified time sink.
