Confused about skills
I put in about 9 hours into Outward so far, I'm really enjoying the game but I'd like to learn some skills for my melee character.

From my understanding, you have 3 skill points to use for learning skills but what skills should I be going for as a melee character? :PixShi:

Those three skill points are only for the breakthrough skills, of which there is one in each skill tree. Other than the skills that are locked behind those breakthroughs, you are only limited by your silver I believe.

As sable says, those 3 points are for the breakthrough. the first trainer in cisro spell sword, learn his base skill to give u an extra 25hp it will help a lot early on. you can learn everything from every trainer that is below the chain line on their skill page, talk to people around as well as some teach other skills.

for melee, i think the monk in the swamp has some good melee skills for things like counter.

Or in other words, buy all the skills but don't chose a breakthrough class until you decide what type of character do you like

It all depends on what weapon you are fighting.

Two-handed weapon, is paired with a bow.
Hunter + Monk

Dagger?
Thief + Monk

Shield?
Mercenary + Spellblade

Pistol?
Mercenary + Monk

For 2H with Bow I went Monk, Mercernary and Thief for my breakthroughs. Hunter only offers one additional bow skill after the breakthrough that is not overly important in my opinion, while the stamina save from mercenary and the dodging-with-your-backpack skill from the thief are really important. Also, if you already choose monk your skills evolve around having the discipline boon already, so adding the rage boon from Hunter in the mix (as prerequisite for the other skills) is too much micro before every fight imho.
Also, the pressure plate traps from the thief skill are so OP when clearing dungeons, I wouldnt want to go without them.

A lot of it depends on personal preference as well. I'm doing a spellsword so I broke though with the spellblade, obviously, but i feel like that this was the only trainer where I NEEDED to do so. I also broke through with the hunter and the monk, but it was more for the raw stats than the skills, neccessarily. I feel like I could have broken through with the shaman or even that guy that gives mana regen and my build would have still been fine and workable, just different.

Rune Warrior for me right now and mana just take +2 up to 40 mana at first.
Rune Sage + Monk + Mercenary
Rune Sage breakthrough 40 mana made your mana up to 80 and take Internalized Lexicon .
Monk need for 40 stamina because 2 hand need a lot of stamina also Master of Motion is helpful.
Mercenary need for 10% move speed and reduce stamina 40% sprint for battle.
Good enough to deal that spirit or ghost enemies with magic 2-hand and can use light ball, defense buff and healing if need it,

I went for a bow hunter/trapper play style, the build is beast! And chose of course the hunter and rogue breakthrough, and finally I am picking the warrior monk for some huge bonuses: stamina, protection and extra damage to physical attacks.
