HOW TO STORE ITEMS
I lost my house, and the chest at the inn is just cosmetic. How do I store items?

Buy your house back, or move on in the story until you get a new one.

Keep in mind, the main focus of this game is the life of a vagrant. It tries to keep you in that mindset from the start, and reinforces it on the tooltips, Your home(s), like your life, is ephemeral. Stop hoarding, and learn to keep only what you need.

If you dump backpacks filled with items in a safe spot, would it disappear? Can act as a way to hoard stuff.

I know the main 'focus' is one thing, but that doesn't deter players from playing it their way, and if the devs must 'intervene' to stop them from doing so, that would make the experience worse.

Who said anything about "intervening" here? The game was designed to be played a certain way. Sure, you can play it any way you like, but complaining about it being something it's not meant to be is just a tad silly.

The point here, which is repeated all throughout the text of the game, and reinforced by its story, is to not get too attached to anything in this game. It can and will all be taken away. That's the entire darn point of the game.

It's about being an adventurer. Not a vagrant specifically, although that is one way about it.

save the person that stranded on the beach with the shrimp monsters, bring a bandage, heal him, he give you a favor scroll, give that to the mayor, you no longer need to pay 150 silver.

To advice to not hoard I think is a silly idea. As a beginner you really need to hoard in order to learn what you can craft, to get money, understanding how to use food, potions, rags etc. Unless you experiment you I feel you miss out on alot in the game, and not hoarding resources to use them would be even more confusing imo.
In the beginning all I did was explore, then haul what I looted back to the base, sell the items I dont needed and craft different things to try them out.

Ignore the idiot telling you not to hoard items, they're just trying to make you conform to their way of playing which is not the way most people play.
Just buy a backpack and drop it IN TOWN on the ground for storage until you're able to buy your house back. Make 2 campfire near the water well, one for alchemy, one for cooking, and put a tent far enough away from those that you don't overheat while sleeping.... congratulations you have a home until you can buy yours back.

This. It's sad that it took so many posts until you actually got an answer.

Adding to this: Setting up a plant tent nearby makes a lot of sense too. They can't be packed up again, but you won't need to, and they only cost 8 silvers or something. And they provide you with nourishment while sleeping. At least i tend to do my longer tent stints for repairing or recovering burnt stamina/health in the city anyway and i can save food using a plant tent for that purpose. If you want the buff from your normal tent, just spend 1 hour insider your normal tent afterwards.

That said, you can put up your camp at a more convenient location, closer to the shops. Just get water from the sea and boil it in a cooking pot to get salt and clean water. You'll probably need a lot of salt during the game anyway (i tend to haul large salt quantities for Cierzo to the other towns because salt is much harder to get in other areas).

You can set up camps like this in every city. In all other cities i do indeed recommend setting up the camp next to a clean water source.

Since i started setting up these camps i basically never used my house again (be it in Cierzo or the one you can get in another city), because the houses are usually in the outskirts of town and you have to run longer distances between shops and your storage/crafting facilities.

As long as the items are left in the town proper then they won't despawn. Putting stuff in a backpack on the ground is convenient, but if you don't feel like buying or crafting one, you can just litter the town and your junk will stay there.

Keep in mind that this DOES NOT apply to anywhere you got to loading screen to go to in town, such as Cierzo Storage. Only the main town maps and your houses are safe.

I get why people dump it on the ground. I recommend 2 things

Making a mule character that works like a mobile atm whenever you need them.

Instead of a backpack on the ground, find any junk pile in the city and use that as a stash. They are free. You might have to find them and they aren’t always on convenient spots, but you can usually find one near merchants.

Either case, it’s only berg and to some degree Harmattan that the house is in a good spot.

I usually dont buy a house for quite some time...as in when I have the set up I want. I always keep a spare back pack to store stuff in. It stays in towns. In fact, I have "spots" in each town with a camp fire where I can shack up when I'm there.

I am never aware there are way to lost a house.
Great discovery

Worth reminding that with Definitive edition, your town resets every 7 days just like any other zone. So your items laying around have a very high risk of despawning.

You can even say to return back every < 6 days, but once you get knocked out and a few days go by, s*it hits the fan :p
