Game Crashes on Startup
Every single time I try to open the game it crashes and I get:

The Game Crashed
The crash report folder named blah blah blah.
It would be great if you send it in!

Well, I followed the instructions and have not received any replies back.

I tried reinstalling the game, and I tried verifying cache through steam. Nothing has worked. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would like to be able to try the game instead of refunding it. I've never had to refund a game and I would prefer to keep it that way.

I have a beefy enough setup.

WIndows 10
i7-8700k
16 gigs ddr4
GTX 1080 TI
SSD/m.2

Out of the 500+ games I own, this is the first once I have personally never been able to get to run.

anything in the windows event viewer? might be a game crash event or system related error event.

might also try the reliability monitor. in windows search run
perfmon /rel
the red x's and yellow !'s might be related issues.

Nope, nothing is showing up in the WIndows Event Viewer. I will give the other suggestion a try though! Thanks.

Having a similar issue was working perfectly fine yesterday for me, no issues, today it crashes every time I try to run it. Reinstalled, verified the cache, nothing. I've had games that have crashed before but they usually give errors that help you fix it, this just seems to have decided to give up and call it a day with no explanation.

So, I installed the public beta part of it, and now it finally opened and went to the title screen. Not sure what the difference is, but I am excited it actually opened. I will try playing it tomorrow when I find some time to see if it works past that.

Hadn't played the game in a long while but wanted to today and it crashed the same way. Does installing the public beta help?

Edit: Did a bit of digging and found this: https://gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/166929/unity-windows-build-crashing-due-to-access-violation-error

Apparently it's caused by having the Citrix application installed (which I do)...My hunch is that the main branch is still on Unity 5.6 which has issues with Citrix, while the experimental has upgraded to Unity 2018 - maybe that explains the crash and why experimental works. However I'll need Citrix for work so it'll be great if anyone has any suggestions.

Probably why. I ended up uninstalling Citrix because it was making another game that I have not load (My Time in Portia). I honestly didn't think about it possibly effecting this game as well. I haven't tried the non-beta version since.

It definitely worked for me when I ran the beta version though, and that was before Citrix was uninstalled.

My wife uses it for work as well, especially now that she has to work from home for a month with the lockdown. Fortunately we have three computers in the house and it doesn't need to be on mine.

Thanks for the useful info. Hope this helps anyone else who may be encountering a crash with Citrix installed:

I uninstalled Citrix completely and restarted my machine then was able to launch Outward successfully. I have now reinstalled Citrix and Outward continues to launch without error. May just be a first launch setup thing?

Nice info! However I've already enabled the experimental branch too as I saw it has lots of good improvements, so I can't test that. Might help others though!

And next time I restart my computer, the game crashes on startup. So I uninstalled the Citrix display adaptor in Device Manager. Working again now... https://steamcommunity.com/app/535930/discussions/1/3393916911746879022/
