No, the durability gets exhausted just by mining. So I suppose it could break eventually, just by mining.

I think what Mishca means is that even when a fishing harpoon or mining pickaxe is broken, it still will catch fish or mine.. it just doesn't make for a good weapon when broken.

i've been mining w/ a broken pickaxe for 165 hours on 3 characters. dont bother repairing it, you'll be fine.

same goes for the fishing spear.... you can still use it when it's completely broken.

No, you can't use harpoons or fishing spears when they are broken. The repair system isn't really a problem, though. So long as you dropped your pack and have nothing perishable in your pouch, you can sleep at home or in a plant tent for as much and as long as you want. Take an extra day of downtime to repair all your gear if needed.
