I loved Human Resource Machine, I hated 7 Billion Humans. I enjoy doing low-level programming because I often find the solutions elegant, but in 7 Billion Solutions, nothing felt right at all.

Its clear care went into this game, but the puzzles felt far less satisfying than in Human Resource Machine. Unlike in Human Resource Machine, I didn't find myself inspired to optimize my programs to achieve the optimization awards, and I found the final puzzles to be a slog rather than enjoyable. When I got stuck and looked up a puzzle in Human Resource Machine, I'd immediately realize where I went wrong. When I looked up a solution in 7 Billion Humans, I would be dumbfounded by it, and spend a while just trying to understand it, eventually accepting that the puzzle's nuances weren't for me.

Maybe I've been spoiled by Zachtronics, but this game's bespoke lang+VM feels clunky and inconsistent. When I pass an execution time milestone in EXAPUNKS (which are mostly self-imposed in that game), I feel accomplished, when I pass one in this game, I feel annoyed. The programs I end up with are so readable that I don't feel the need for comments, but while constructing them I'm forced to keep track of what avenues happen to not work due to mechanisms I feel are out of my control: quirks with comparisons, the way agents move in the space, and instruction timings, the latter being something I can't pin down even in the simple case where there's no waiting for another agent involved. I played most of Human Resource Machine (must get back to that) and don't recall getting frustrated with it in the same way.

If the dev is reading this and interested in a QoL patch, these are my suggestions:

1. Only reroll the RNG seed when exiting the level, rather than constantly rerolling unless the player is shown a failing case by the manager.
   
2. Add a breakpoint feature (EXAPUNKS' is a simple Ctrl+click).
   
3. Alternatively, increase the max. of the speed slider.
   
4. Add a configurable length no-op, a.k.a a sleep instruction. Less important if the timings of each instruction are documented fully.
   
5. Better program management: Store the averaged runtime for a solution and show it somewhere, allow programs to be named, and maybe allow more than 3 of them.

This is a fun puzzle/problem solving game. I like what I have played so far..

Had very low expectations from this sequel and was blown away. 7 Billion Humans is basically just a better version of Human Resource Machine in every way, and I realised that within my first 15 minutes of playtime. The Tomorrow Corporation doubled down on pretty much everything: the soundtrack, the cutscenes, the humour, the level design, the whole nine yards. And it definitely payed off. Even the first 10 seconds you can tell it's going to be a fun time. I'm somehow more excited for World of Goo 2 because of how good this sequel is.

As of writing it's still on sale and worth the price.

If HRM was an assembly level programming, this one is a compiled language level programming.
