How to unlock abyssal difficulty ?

i would like to know that as well; defeating act 5 on hard can´t be it

I got it unlocked but I don't know how. Maybe you have to take little to no damage or finish runs quickly. I would like to know how as well

Maybe do you have finish the game on hard ?

I didn't even know there's a harder difficulty, as the game doesn't really tell you about it.

yes up up: as mentioned i beat athena on hard but didn´t unlock it; but i didn´t beat it quick

Not sure about it, but perhaps it's like in binding of isaac, etc. where you need to take X deals from a certain "group"

Up, just beated Athena in hard difficulty and i want to step up.

Update: I finished my last run, killed Ares and also visited his temple like 6 times in the run.

I also did not pick up any hearts, on top of that (if that should be of any relevance, got the achievement for that)

Hmm, crazy, i unlocked Abyssal after i defeated Zeus the second time on hard. But how can you fight Ares? I have found his coin one time (but i dont know why or how).

Altough when i restarted the game the abyssal difficulty on the counter in the bar vanished and i can only select easy normal and hard now. When i select hard, the game still has these new rooms and enemies that i encountered on my first abyssal run.

You need to get into his room multiply times (fill up the violence bar) and accept his deal at least 3 (maybe random number? No clues, got mine after the third deal in a single run) times to get the coin to spawn (together with an special podest). After fighting Zeus you get a new portal to appear, it's going to glow red and you are now in a new area, at the end of which you fight Ares.

I still have the Abyssal difficulty unlocked, even after finishing the final Boss and restarting the game.

So abyssal difficulty seems to disapear after one run when you have unlocked it ?
